Hi maestro - Welcome to the Board :)

I think the only way of doing this is to clear the Real Time Clock RAM in CMOS - look in your mobo manual for how to do this on your mobo. This clears the CMOS memory of date, time and system setup parameters - including the password (?). Not sure of the latter point, but I guess so.

    Usual method is :

Turn off computer and unplug power cord
Remove the CMOS battery from the mobo
Short the two solder points revealed under the battery with a paperclip or screwdriver head
    Reinstall the battery
Power up the computer, boot up and enter the bios and re-enter data.

I would hold on for further replies to confirm that the password will be reset - or not.

well i knew that but my battery is sodered on and i dont have a sodering iron to put the battery back on if i took it off. the battery is a not the flat wafer kind, it kinda looks like a thick tootsie roll. ummm is there any other way i can wipe it without takeing out the battery? I got this computer from a bisness when they went out of business. and i dont have the manual. so can i go any where online to get the manual? cause i think i can short a jumper to reset the bios but i dont know which jumper because i dont have the manual. what should i do?

Look up the board on the manufacturers website, everthing you need to know should be there.

Those jumpers are located in different on different boards.

Ummm... I clear CMOS regularly (for an unrelated problem! ) and it doesn't affect the bios or OS password in any way. Unplug the comp, disconnect the power supply from the mobo, reset the jumpers, make a cup of coffee, put the jumper pins back and do the rest in reverse. Remember to change the date/time and adjust your processor speed after you reboot.

If you flash the bios online, that might wipe the password, don't know for sure. I would definitely have a look at the mobo website for more info.

If one clears CMOS, any BIOS password (user or supervisor) will be wiped out. Period!

Clearing CMOS requires disconnecting power connector to the MoBo, jumpering CMOS from 1&2(run) to 2&3(reset) for 5-10 seconds and back to 1&2, then reconnecting power cable to the Mobo.

There are a few (very, very, very few) MoBo's that do not have CMOS jumpers, in which case the battery must be pulled to clear CMOS.

Will also add that I haven't seen barrel batteries used since the era of 486's and small Pentiums. That puts you back into an AT board and you will find very little support from Biostar on legacy products (just looked).

At what point are you prompted for a BIOS password? Just want to be clear that you are not looking for the administrator one.

Yes. And, you could also be prompted for a password on startup which without, won't even let your machine go to a Windows startup or sign in screen. These can be cleared according to my previous instructons. Most systems will also let you disable "user" BIOS passwords if you go right to the Bios and disable or change the user password.

My (Huh?) was prompted by the fact that there is no such thing as an administrator Bios password - be careful with some of the information disseminated here, regardless of any poster's good intentions. I think someone was just trying to save face.

Your MB has an AMI Bios and you may have some success doing a search for backdoor passwords for AMI. I'd give you a hand but that won't be posted on this board, messaged or emailed. You've now got the hint you need anyway. Good Luck.

Hardware is certainly not my strong point, and I shouldn't have jumped into a conversation of things I know little about. I have never run into a mobo that required a password to enter BIOS. I only wanted to make sure I didn't misunderstand the question about which password was being sought. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Not a problem - now I feel bad. I think the important thing is for everyone to continue to post whatever they think might be helpful or for that matter, whatever they want. Discussions like this help resolve issues and I'll guarantee that Maestro knows a lot more today and is much closer to a solution than he/she was a few days ago. Your posts helped to clarify that and take away some of the potential confusion. My apologies if I sounded too blunt - its one of my many weaknesses. The last thing I want to do is offend one or come across as "all-knowing or condescending ". Personally, I've found that I get dumber by the day - the pace of technology advancement continues to accelerate and its only through shared knowledge and experience that one can even hope to stay somewhat "current ". Please don't go " back to lurking and learning...quietly" - we'd all be deprived of a most valuable resource. Besides, your wisdom re: Dell alone qualifies you as a very well informed and knowledgeable person.

If anyone should be apologizing, its me. I didn't mean to come across the way it sounds when I re-read this thread.

    ;)

I am in the same boat with a Gateway2000 SOLO2300 Notebook given to me that has a CMOS password. I have disassembled the Notebook and have been unable to find the battery backup for the CMOS. I believe that the processor is a P// 266 MHZ. Is it possible that the CMOS is in a EEPROM and does not need a battery? This PC has been setting for six month with a dead system battery.
Appreciate if someone could help me resolve this.
    Thank you in advance.
