I am sure there must be an expert who can give me some advice on this.

I have 2 Hard Drives, a CD Burner and a DVD, and I would like to know what the best setup for these is.

Reading the other postings dealing with this subject I understand that the recommendations from the Manufacturers may not always be the best, so I decided to come to the (unpaid) experts. :D

    Hi Breezycricket,
First, unpaid yes, expert no:( ...:D

I am also interested in this topic and there have been a few discussions in these forums, but I have been unconvinced to change my setup (I have searched on the net and cannot see firm evidence of the "best" setup).

I have my harddrives on IDE channel 1, opticals on 2. Older CDrom drives liked to be set as master. CD burners seem to be happy as slaves. I would set the DVD as master and the CD burner as slave.

After consultation with my IT nephew, we came to the conclusion that as far as setting up the harddrives go, it would be good to get the OS on one drive and the applications on another.

    Matt

you did not state how many ide ports you have on your mobo, newer mobo's have up to four, two are usually raid but you can use them to boot from. I have 2 hard drives, dvd reader, dvd writer and a cd writer. I keep the hd's on a separate ide ports. This is supposed to make them work faster, the dvd writer on one ide and the dvd reader and cd writer on another. Hope this helps

    Thank you for the replies.

This is what I have ended up with.

Both Hard Drives on the Primary IDE Channel, and one of these is used strictly for backup only.

I scrapped my CD burner and the DVD and replaced them with a DVD burner, set as Master on the 2nd IDE Channel, and an ordinary everyday CD Rom as Slave.

Now, while I have your attention, in testing the CD Rom, I found that the sound works fine whether the audio cable is attached to the sound card or not.

My question therefore is, what does the audio cable do?

    In answer to your question.

The audio cable from the CD to the sound card allows you to use the sound card amp and speakers to playback the sound from CD-ROM.

The audio cable just connects the line level audio output form the CD-ROM drive to one PC soundcard line level audio input dedicated to CD-ROM audio cable.

    Cheers

    Thank you for the info.

However, my CD plays fine without the cable being connected, so I can't see any reason for even having it.

    This certainly explains it.

    Many thanks for the information.
