    Hi,
Does anyone know why Icons disappear from the system tray.

We had an icon for "Wintidy ", (a program to restore your desktop layout) and a icon for "USB Mass Storage Device" and they have disappeared.

We tried uninstalling and reinstalling "Wintidy" but that did not restore the icon.

    Thanks

    Hi,

You might have enabled Windows to hide inactive icons, that means icons not used for some time will automatically be hidden, and you will have to click on the arrow beside the system tray to unhide it. Or, it might have been hidden permanantly. For this, you may have to go into the program in which its icon disapeared, go to its settings, and make sure you make it show icon on taskbar. If this does not help, try right-clicking the start menu, go to properties, and click the "Customize" button beside the checkbox for "Hide Inactive Icons ". Try to see if the program was set to "Always Hide "

  3. to hide this advert.

Sorry for butting in, but I'd like to make the latter part of GreatGuy's suggestion a bit clearer (and easier).

Right-click on any blank area of the taskbar and select Properties. (Right-clicking on the Start button and selecting Properties opens the Start Menu tab instead of the Taskbar tab, where you need to be.) The box for Hide inactive icons must be checked to activate the Customize button.

Personally, I prefer to have all tray icons showing (Hide inactive icons unchecked) ... that way I know for sure that my background programs are running.

    Hi,
Thanks guys for your suggestions. I tried them but it does not help.

My "Wintidy" icon and the "Safely Remove Hardware" icons are listed when you hit the "Customize" button. I changed these two to "Always Show" but they still do not appear in the ststem tray.

    Don't know what happened.

    Thanks

    Hi,
I just ran the repair function for IE 6 SP1 from the Add/Remove program in Control Panel and now my missing icons have returned.

Just thought I'd let everyone know.

    Thanks
