    I'm still on Cloud 9 after getting a Broadband Connection! Yet I have a question. I'm on a Cable Modem.

    I used the TCP/IP Analyzer on a URL and got the following report. Am wondering if there is something I could do, simply, to improve the setup. I'm getting a 400KBs to 900KBs, depending upon the URL Test site. My Provider said that 256kbs up and 2MB down was normal.

    "MTU = 1500
    MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
    MSS = 1460
    Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

    Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits (scale factor of 4)
    Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

    RWIN is a multiple of MSS
    Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)<
    128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)<
    64240 (MSS x 44) <
    bandwidth * delay product:

    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
    Time to live left = 56 hops. "

    The above, "Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS: --------- ", I don't understand what that means. I'm satisified with what I have but never want to trun away an improvement.
    Am I just whistling into the wind, or is this something I should change?

    Mudd,

    Your speeds look GREAT to me! I rarely get speeds that good out of my provider, mostly because of bottlenecking through 1 server during peak hours, which seems to be from about 6PM to midnight through the week, and partly from what I think are old lines (running -0.15 db power level most of the time). Do a 'tracert www.windowsbbs.com' from a command prompt to see what kind of latency you have. Right now my low is 9ms and high is 48ms and my d/l speed is 1505kbps (best I've seen in a while) and upload is 258kbps. The higher your numbers, the slower you're gonna go.

    MTU = 1500
    MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
    MSS = 1460
    Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

    Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
    Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

    RWIN is a multiple of MSS
    Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
    256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
    128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
    bandwidth * delay product:

    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = OFF
    Time to live left = 117 hops

    TTL value is ok.
    Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
    Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

    SG speed test;
    Current bandwidth = 1.979Mbps (1979kbps, 242 KBps)

    Have you installed the TCP/IP Optimizer? Assuming that you have, the 'Other values that might work well" simply means play with it. Try some different settings, run them for a while (a couple days, week maybe), try something else, see what works best for your conditions. Sometimes XP's default settings will be best.

    Dave

    Thanks Dave. It's just that I know very little about this. I have the Optimizer and tried it a couple of ways. The first time I ran it seemed to help. I backup that up and tried different settings. Always came back to what I have now.

    So maybe I am just where I should be. Not knowing what I'm doing I think I'll stay with what I got.

    "Your speeds look GREAT to me!" convinced me that I better leave what I have and satisfied.

    Again thank you for the information. Below is the tracert information

    Those are good numbers. Did you do another speed test at the same time?
    You might also want to check your signal level at the same time. Here is a rule of thumb guide to what they should be. With good signal values and low tracert numbers like you have now, if your other connected computer isn't working the bandwidth much, you should see more speed than you are, even though as I said before, those are good speeds. You may see better results from the 64240 RWIN setting over time though.

    Dave

    I'm going to take your word "those are good numbers" and leave it there.This is getting to far over my head.

    Not even knowing that I had a good or bad service I'm totally pleased with what I have. I'm concerned that if I start tinkering with setting that I will end up with something I don't want and won't know how to change. I'll be like a good Poker Player when he thinks he's on to something good but not sure, "I'll stand Pat! "

    All of your words are encouraging to me, and I thank you for your time.

    You're welcome Mudd. Should you decide to tweak it some, let me know. I'll help as much as I can and provde links to much more help than I can give.

    Going to Stop Here

    I believe I'm probably at the best an amateur could do. After I followed some suggestions on the pages you sent, the last test was "973KBS." After using a dialup for my entire computer history, this is better than waking up some morning and seeing my wife young again!!!

    You were helpful.
