    Hi guys and girls,

Disaster struck me last weekend. After playing with boot screens, my XP would not boot anymore telling me that could not find NTOSKRNL.exe... Yeah... that one. Safe mode, last configuration, etc., to no avail.

Thanks God I had a Ghost image (1 month old, luck me) and all went well after 1/2 hour. But the question is: how can I retrieve that file properly?

I tried to boot to DOS and copied the expanded file from the CD to the system32 folder but it did not like it. Any idea?

    Cheers!

I'v been waiting for an answer to yor question about ntsokrnl.exe. I built a system for my son and after a week he tells me he gets th ntoskrnl error. He's 3000 miles away so all I could do was send hime the file.

The darn thing is 1900k in size so I had to burn it.

Someone must have an answer to why this is happening and how to overcome another disaster.

    Your answer:
Boot to rescue mode. Copy the ntoskrnl.ex_ from the CDROM. Uncompress it and restore it to the c:\
How to boot to rescue mode:
Boot from XP CD. Choose to repair with recovery console.

Or, perform a repair reinstall. This will reinstall WinXP over the top of itself.

    NTOSKRNL

    Eric,

Thanks for the suggestion. Just a minor correction to your reply: ntoskrnil.exe lives in c:\windows\system32, not in c:\

As I said in my first post, I booted to DOS and copied the original file to that directory but it kept not finding it. Because I had a Ghost image, to restore it was easier and quicker than reinstall the whole thing but I am still curious.

Also, I could not boot at all not even to rescue mode. Without the ntoskrnl.exe XP is just a corpse, does not do a thing...

    Thanks anyway...
