I'm running Word and Excel 2000 on Win XP Home ed. All of a sudden, word and excel take about twice as long to open (whether I open an existing document or try to start a new one). They're slow! I just started happening today. I haven't done anything different. I haven't installed any new software, patches, etc. that would effect the system. I have tried restarting the computer, but no luck. I've got a 1.3ghz Duron and 256mb ram, so I don't think its the machine. I don't have any other programs running, so I'm not bogging it down. I don't know why they would open slow all of a sudden.

Once they're open, they perform fine. And, they are the only two programs that open slow. Everything else (Outlook, Power Point, IE, etc.) all open normally.

    Any thoughts?

This is clearly a case of Symantec hitting the fan!

If I block Word and Excel in the firewall, they resume normal operation.

If I, without having done the above, untick Office Plug-in, in NAV > Options > Miscellaneous then they resume normal operation.

    A clear connection to Norton.

Yes, mine seems to be network/broadband related too! When I go to network connections and disable my LAN Connection, Word works fine. But, as soon as I re-enable the connection, Word gets all slow again.

How do I fix this on Win XP Home ed.?

    Thanks!

I see what you mean! I, too, went into NAV and unclicked the Office Plug-in. Word and Excel work fine now. Any idea why this is happening?

Symantec Update hitting the fan ...... ...... ...... !

    Edited:

It was not an Update to the products that caused this but probably that someone hadn´t renewed a security certificate for a server.
