For some reason unknown to me I am having great trouble using MS Word (2K Pro). It's worked fine for the last 2 years and I haven't knowingly done anything in the last 24 hours that should change that.

When I try and open Word I get the licencing tile in the middle of the screen as usual and then nothing. It then generally sits there indefinatley, or if not opens after 3-4 minutes but then freezes again when I try and open another document.

According to Task Manager the application is not even running, But in the list of processes winword.exe has appeared. I've checked CPU and there is no usage at all. Memory usage varies between 8-20,000K.

No other processes seem to be doing anything out of the ordinary as far as CPU/memory usage is concerned.

Any ideas or experience of similar problems?

2 things you can try. Put in the original install disk, then select the repair feature. Or, search for normal.dot, delete it, it will regenerate when opeining word again.

    thanks for the reply...

the disks were my first thought until I realised I had left them with a pile of stuff at a friends house and can't get over there until monday :(

i found 2 normal.dot files and deleted them both.

restarted word, licence tile flashed up and then a blank doc appeared but no buttons or anything. 'requesting virus scan' was visible in the bottom left hand corner. stayed like that for about 3 minutes and then opened. same thing happens if i try to open another file when in word.

Thought i'd re-try with Norton Anti-virus 2003 shutdown to see if the scan was the problem but got no improvement. shame cos i was looking forwrd to blaming something else on it :D

    anymore ideas greatly appreciated.

After reading Christer’ thread (http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26432) I had a play and got the following results:

    - Connected via ADSL and Word won’t work
    - Disconnect and Word works fine

It seems to be ADSL/Network related. Not sure what is going on but I seem to have solved my problem.

I forgot that I changed a TCP/IP setting this morning, after finding the following error message In the event viewer system log (go to control panel/administrative tools):

    Source: IPNATHLP
Message: The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration, insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code.

I searched Google and found the following information: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win2000/t1026577276. Anyway didn’t bother going to Microsoft knowledgebase as I’m not running ICS, but thought that changing the default gateway setting (mentioned at the bottom of the thread) might solve the problem.

    continued below.....

    ...continued from above

On W2K Pro…To uncheck the "˜Use default gateway on remote network’ box I closed my ADSL connection, then went to the properties section for my ADSL connection, selected the networking tab, then highlighted "˜Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’, clicked properties, clicked advanced and it is on the general tab.

Once unchecked, I clicked OK and then opened my ADSL connection. I went back to the system log and no error message appeared, and broadband seemed to work fine.

Anyway I just went back and did the opposite (checked the Use default gateway on remote network’ box). Now Word is working fine, my ADSL connection is working fine and I no longer see an IPNATHLP error in the system log :D

I don’t understand why, and I don't know if this is going to help with other peoples problems but it may be worth a go?

This is clearly a case of Symantec hitting the fan!

If I block Word and Excel in the firewall, they resume normal operation.

If I, without having done the above, untick Office Plug-in, in NAV > Options > Miscellaneous then they resume normal operation.

    A clear connection to Norton.

I ran into the same problem this morning on my fastest machine and mistakenly thought it was related to some new scanning hardware and PDF software interfacing with Word. Had severe slow down problems with Word and SystemWorks. Then ran into the same thing at two different clients re: Word. Tried a bunch of stuff tonight and unticked the NAV Office Plug-In as part of a trial and error excercise. Presto - problem resolved.

Have read Newt's referral thread and not really sure I understand the expired certificate link to this. Would appreciate a little wisdom thrown this direction if anyone cares to break it down for this dummy.

    ;)

    Hi Rockster2U!

As I have understood the discussions on another board, these certificates are retrieved and stored locally on the computer. The applications check these certificates ín the local cache and as long as the date stamp is still valid, never checks over the web. When the date stamp is no longer valid, the applications start connecting to the web to retrieve a new certificate and they do so until they find one ...... ...... which was not available.

It seems to me like somewhere, someone is looking for a new job ...... ...... !

Thanks for the explanation - I really thought I had a problem until I ran into this on a couple of other machines.
