I have recently installed WinXP and I am now having problems installing certain programs, such as MS Active Sync and WS Ftp. I run the setup-file and the program copies files, but after completing copying, it dies. I've looked in the Task Manager and the prog is still running but not using any CPU. What have I done wrong?!?!?:(

We all see the recommendation when most installations begin that all other programs should be closed before we start. But most of us ignore this most of the time.

For me, it was a small clipboard utility that stalled my installations. They would eventually finish all right, but sometimes it took 30 minutes or more. I had to just let it sit to find out.

Sometimes theming programs like WindowBlinds or StyleXP can have strange effects on programs not configured to deal with them.

Try shutting down other programs. Be sure they really terminated in Task Manager. You may get lucky and discover that only one app is paralyzing everything.

If all else fails, many programs can be installed in Safe Mode.
