IE6 Text Size resetting itself

I want the largest text on my browser. I have to, at least once a day, manually set it back after it defaults to medium. I just watched it reset itself at midnight, while I was reading! There must be a simple fix for this...right?....

Do you use a scroll mouse sometimes they alter the text size
press ctrl and scroll and maybe take it apart and clean thuroughly

Scroll wheel mouse HAS caused me to make unintended changes sometimes, usually in pull-down menus...

...but the text size change is occurring in all open windows without me touching anything; a second, minimized window also reset itself at midnight tonight, in addition to the one I was reading. I'm quite sure it's happening every night! Grrrr...

 

I cant think of what would couse that,, except maybe a style sheet ,, some hijackers use them and would be trying to put it in place (if removed or changed)at a timed interval.. Look and see
Go tools internet options accessability ,, anything check there ?

If Not maybe the others here will clue in . any other problems ?

have you scanned for spyware mailware trojans etc etc ?

I would do a system file check. You may or may not need to redo updates- you can always check with the MS update scan afterwards. This is from my notes:

Windows 2000 & XP comes with a very handy tool called the system file checker. The SFC tool itself will scan your computer for system files that may have been replaced when some old or poorly made program was installed. This usually happens because the programmer who made the software did not create it to check the versions of each system file it replaces.

To protect your computer from old system files, Microsoft created a special service that is built into the operating system. This service monitors your system files, and if one is replaced or deleted, ICS will automatically restore the system file.

SFC also keeps old copies of system files when updates are installed. These files are stored in:
C:\Windows\system32\dllcache
I prefer to use the system backup for the ability to roll back to a former configuration however.

To manually invoke the system file checker, go to the command prompt and type:

sfc /scannow

The system will immediately begin to check all the current system files and restore the original copies. You may be asked to insert the Windows CD as well during the restore.

Clue: Keep in mind that after you perform a system file restore you should install the newest service pack so you are running the most current, Microsoft approved system files.

For you XP users, SFC should be used as a last resort. If you have been creating system restore points, first roll back to your latest restore point and see if that fixes your problem.

I agree with others, who have stated "this feature is buggy ". May have something to do with cached pages. I can change view to larger and later reset to smaller but an occasional a sublink click will morph, back to larger setting, text. If the link is opened in New window, text, may be large or small. Keep in mind all of this is random and happens on rare occasions. Closing and opening IE takes care of temporary nuisance. Mostly I just ignore it or reset txt view again and chalk it up to "one of those things ".

Believe it to be cache related because IE may be using the cached history to show the page or parts of said same. Or perhaps on a refresh some text size preference check isn't getting checked and it will use default "medium ".
NOTE:Could also be site versus IE glitch. Some sites still set via script their "font size" while IE overrides this. I guess sometimes IE loses the battle or gets struck with what we often refer to as "AMNESIA ".

MS history of "accessibility features or magnifier" has always been a bit buggy. I believe this IE built in "text size view" perk/improvement is just an expansion of those features and still has a few quirks.

Possible Work Around

There is another option. But this is a 'global' option, one that will apply across the board to all applications with text on your computer.

Rightclick anywhere on your open desktop (computer screen) and choose "Properties" from the popup menu.

This will bring up the display properties dialog box also accessible from the Display applet in the Windows Control Panel.

Click on the Settings tab and on the General tab of the dialog box, click on the 'Advanced' button, and you should have the ability to change your "DPI" setting to large size if it's currently set to small, or to choose a custom size. Back in the Display Properties, click OK and Windows will either change the settings dynamically or do it after a reboot, depending on how you have your system configured.

 

Thanks for the help, y'all...I guess wishing for a "simple fix" was a bit naive on my part, given the complexity of today's browser.

A cached page issue seems logical; I visit a few sites several times a day, which is where I notice the text size change most often. It's only mildly irksome to change it myself, nothing I can't live with!

But it sure is nice to have a place to ask these things! This board is awesome....

Arpeggioh - are you holding down the CTRL key and moving the mouse wheel to change text size? That is so quick and easy as to make the changes you are seeing pretty much a non-event.

After I read your post I realized that my browser does this to me from time to time but I just scroll up the size I want and barely even notice the glitch.
