I need to download a stand alone version of service pack 4 for win 2000. The install tells you this is possible but I did not write down the site and can not get to that message again. I have searched the service pack site and can not find where to do it. It appears they do not want it easy to do this I am having problems with the download when I try to do it over the web.
    Thanks in advance.

Go to Windows Update Catalog , click "Find updates ..." > choose OS = "Windows 2000 RTM" > choose Your langauge > click "Search" > choose "Critical updates ..." > scroll down to find Win2Ksp4 at the bottom > click "Add" > click "Go to ..." > click "Browse" to find Your download folder and download to it.

    Christer,
You are a novice's treasure. I went to the site and found Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Network Install for IT Professionals - (Posted Date: December 04, 2003) it does not say this is a standalone. That may have been part of my confusion. But I am downloading it now (at the office) and if this will do the trick at home without the computer on line I am all set. Thanks so very much.

    Rob,
    You´re welcome ...... :) ...... !

When I first went there, I was confused by the "network install" thing ...... ...... I have no network?

It is, however, a complete download to be distributed from one computer, over a network, to other multiple computers.
It works well on a stand-alone computer, disconnected from the web.

I´m on a 10 Mbps broadband connection and I am always on standby for large downloads that my "modem connected friends" need ...... ...... well, that´s what THEY think anyway.

Let me inject another note here. The reason I am doing this is during the install of the SP4 I get a svhost error saying it is shutting down. When the install was over and I rebooted I noted everything was running very slow. I went to processes and saw that the cpu was running 100%. the system was running about 25% and svhost was running about 75% this seemed to be pretty continuous so I though something had got garbled in the download. Am I on the wrong track to solve this?
    Thanks

Well, I have never experienced a situation like Yours first hand so I really don´t know.

    Was it an On-Line installation?
It is always a risk to disable firewall and antivirus software when On-Line but they can play a role in this.

I always download the file with FW and AV software activated but when installing, I disconnect from the web and shut down all programs and applications.

This is in order to minimize the risk for disturbing activities which might want to write to the HDD at the same time as the installer.

I had thought that it might be a virus but I ran the Trend Office housecall in addition to the installed AVG antivirus full scan and they both came up clean so think it had to be something else. I will check when I get home and see if I come up with anything else. I ran a complete reinstall last night and will see if it comes up the same, if it does, I will do the whole thing offline thanks to the help here and we wil see see how that turns out.

On the linked page above, Symantec has a welchia removal tool. Tun it first before getting into a full reinstall.

I downloaded the file and its readmore accompanyment. The downloader made a group of folders when it downloaded. I just want to make sure they have no relevance. I copied the SP4 exe to a cd. Is that all I need to install it on various computers? I now think I may update my primary computer as well. Once I get all the bugs out of this one.
Thanks for all the guidance I really believe I am learning something in all this.

That's odd. The network install of SP4 is just ONE standalone 129 MB self extracting cab file named W2KSP4_EN.EXE.

surprised me but it made 6 folders and subfolders, finally placing the 129 meg file in the bottommost. Confused me so I wanted to make sure that I had the right thing and the rest was unnecessary.

The main file will extract itself into individual files first prior to install. Once install is complete, the folders should be deleted. If you can save the files and folders and be sure that they are complete, subsequent installs will be shortened because the machine does not have to extract the files first.

I am also of the opinion though that your machine is infected with the virus and needs to be removed first.

Task manager will list several instances of svchost. There should be only one.

That is normal when downloading Updates. I don´t know why but I would think that if You do all downloads to the same folder for different OS's, then it will get organized.

These folders have nothing to do with the extraction during the installation. Any folder and files created during that process will be deleted when the installation has been completed.

I always take the last folder, containing the file, and store it in my dedicated "Updates Folder" and delete the rest of the "download tree ".

I have a CD with different downloaded updates to assist less fortunate friends who are on dial-up connections. The folder tree has not been missed once and I do these installations from the CD without copying to the HDD.
