A week or so ago the Standby function on my hp Pavilion 9800 ceased functioning. At the same time, the Sleep button on my MS Office keyboard ceased functioning, and when I go to Start>Off the Standby button is greyed out.

On top of this, I can't turn my computer off. I go to Start>Off, the Off button is still red, I click on it, the computer shuts down and immediately restarts.

All of this is a pain.

I checked Power Options, and the Hibernate tab has disappeared.

A local computer expert came to the house, but couldn't find a solution. I posted the problem on another, more general, BB, but no solution.

    Any ideas anyone?

Thank you, Pete. I went to Kelly's Korner and it suggested a Microsoft patch to download, which I did, but it didn't help. Then I pursued other Kelly suggestions, and landed on Microsoft's Online Assisted Support page, which I had never used before. Somehow, I never realized that I was Passport-registered - don't ask, I don't know, myself. So I have sent an SOS to MS, and now we'll see what happens. I just hope it's not a hardware problem; my machine isn't exactly portable, and I'm not exactly handy.

So thanks very much for your help; I'll let you know if I am successful.

Problem solved. Eventually even Microsoft suggested what I had already decided to do, i.e. reinstall XP.:)
