    Hi all,

First let me apologize if I forget anything. I've been trying to get this all day and I'm no further then I was several hours ago.

First problem. My computer can't go into standby. Pressing standby starts the process but then stops and says my keyboard won't allow it to sleep. So, I thought maybe my keyboard drivers. (Logitech wireless) Downloaded the latest. Still the same message. Uninstalled everything and just let it run like a normal keyboard. Still says keyboard is the problem. Said the standard keyboard was the problem, I suppose that's the default it uses. I read that there should be a tab in the hardware properties for the keyboard that says power management. It's not there.

Here's the funny thing. I went into my BIOS and power management was off so I turned it back on. Checked my XP pro (dual boot system) and it still doesn't have the tab. Yet, my XP Home (German Edition) has the tab. I think it has something to do with that tab not being there. Any ideas?

Problem 2: After I boot the computer I get the welcome screen quickly. (that's not the problem :)) When I log onto my user I see everything loading up, but when I click on the start menu it'll let me look at this menu but not select anything. After about 10-15 secs something seems to take up its resources. Can't even click the start menu or anything else. Finally after another 10-15 secs, the hard drive light will come on, and it will finish up.

I've been hunting down this problem all day with no luck. I've tried turning things off one by one in the startup. I've tried watching the task manager while it's starting everyting up. It seems that it has about 26 processes running, then it has to 'wait' for an additional 4-5.

Any idea what's causing it or how I can fix it??

    Thanks from a frustrated newbie.

The internal setup on that kbd may not allow standby no matter what you try with it. Would Hibernate server you as well and, if so, will the PC hibernate?

Does the PC go into standby when booted to the XP-home OS?

As to the speed issue - how much memory do you have and do you see the same issue with both OS versions?

    Thanks for the answer Newt.

As for the speed. I have 512mb and 1.66ghz. The computer is fast with everything else it does. But in this moment it seems that something is hanging it up for about 20 seconds, then it's back to normal. Watching the task manager, it seems that there is almost no usage on the CPU. Then when it finally 'releases' and allows everything to continue the usage jumps up to about 30-50%

As for the keyboard, perhaps I should shed a little more light. I just recently re-installed XP (another long story). The whole time before when I had XP running with this keyboard, and stand by worked. I will try the hibernation to see how that works and if it'll suit my needs.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Normally you let Windows take care of Power Management not the Bios. When you reinstalled did you put the motherboard chipdrivers on? You can run into a lot of niggly problems without them.

    Hello all,

I tried the hibernation last night and I ran into the same error message, only with hibernation instead of standby. It's claiming the keyboard will not allow hibernation.

    The plot thickens.

Maggie -- Yes, I took care of that first.

Thanks everyone. It's probably something really stupid that I'm missing.

From what I read, you are running English XP-Pro and German XP-home dual boot on the PC.

Are you seeing the standby and hibernate issues with both versions?

    Were both versions reinstalled?

    Hello all,

Thanks for the responses. I have figured out the problem by way of using the XP disk to repair my installation. After running the repair I now have the Power Managment tab and the computer goes into standby and hibernation.

But now I have a new problem..
