I downloaded IE6 FULL download, but when I try to run the install I get the error msg. "Ver. you're trying to install is older than one already installed." So, it doesn't let me install over it. What do I need to do to install over it, or uninstall what/which files so I can reinstall it?

    gplea,

Sounds like you downloaded IE6. But, you already have IE6SP1 installed. There's no need to uninstall and reinstall IE6SP1. Just run the repair feature.

If you need help running the repair, post back. Either I or someone else will assist you.

Go to add/remove programs via the control panel. Look for Internet explorer, highlight, click the add/remove button. You should get the option to repair. For my sake, why do you think you need to reinstall/repair IE?

Which OS are you running? Repair function of IE under XP is completely different from that under Win 9x, etc.

    Running Win2k SP4

I'm running Win2k SP4. Shouldn't that work with the XP fix?

    Thanks,

Under XP the repair feature for IE is not found in Add/Remove programs and a different route must be followed.

I am not familar with W2K, but follow aleekat's post for starters.

BTW the repair option is not an XP fix, it is a function of IE.

    Hi,

    Refer to the Microsoft Article
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

This may help a little. (I am refering to Method 2)To reinstall or uninstall IE6, you may need to remove the key from the registry using the registry editor (regedit). It is most likely u do not get IE6 in the Add/Remove Programs List, for it is installed with the OS. It is accesible by clicking Start->Run->regedit . Do not fool around with regedit as your computer is surely going to go kaboom if u made a mistake. Follow the article closely, it should teach you how to remove the key for IE6. After removing, restart, upon booting, there should be something that pops up, that ask you whether you want to clean the setting for IE6. It is up to your choice. (If u want to reinstall and not uninstall run IE6 installation. It should be ok.)

    Hope it helps

    This Doesn't Look Good

OK. I went to the MS URL you posted and kept the instructions that pertained to my problem. One potentially bigger problem has seemed to rear it's VERY ugly head. When I ran regedit I got this error msg:

"Memory Access Violation occured in module kernel32 at ..... " (various places)

Is this time for a format?

    Thanks,
    G.P. Lea

I still would like to know why you are doing a reinstall? You havent given any problems with IE, just the install problem.

    Here's the problem

I switched from Dial-up to DSL light. Originally, I got on fine using either browser; but then I uninstalled the old ISP's app, and that's when the trouble started. Everytime I would pull up IE6 it would have at the very top (above File, Edit, etc...) where the name of any app shows "Cannot Find Server...(then the name of my old ISP)" I've checked EVERY, and I mean, EVERY parameter, I've gone thru the DSL install at least 10 times; then just this Fri. I found a .dll that hadn't been uninstalled, but even getting rid of that didn't solve the problem. My DSL can't figure it out either. It's not as big a problem right now because NS7.1 is my default browser; but I am going to be studying for some online courses that unfortunately only support IE6. I've been considering doing a reformat for about a month now just to clean that drive up; and if I can't even read my regedit, that seems as good a reason as any. At any rate, it would still be a good thing to know how to do battle with that rascal.

    Tanx,
    G.P. Lea
