    Ramona,

I've been having a situation with Netscape Mail that's driving me nuts! Whenever I receive a message that is an advertisement, everything locks up and stops responding forcing me to kick the surger protector power button off. I hate to do this as i've ruined one hard drive in the past doing just this but it's the only way out. I'm not even sure if this is being caused by Netscape Mail, it could be my AV or Firewall programs.

Also, it only seems to do this at startup. It's like whenever I first sign on to get my e-mail, if there are any messages like that, it locks. Once i'm on and running and receive a message like that, I can retrieve it without a hitch.

Is there a setting somewhere in mail that I can use to basically "turn off" these advertisement messages that have large images within them?

    Thanks in advance...

    Ken

    Hi Ken,

You can turn off those ads with this setting:

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
    Highlight the Account Name
Scroll to the bottom of the right pane
Disable: Compose Messages in HTML format

However, that will only fix the symptom of your problem. I have to wonder why receiving HTML Mail freezes your PC. Try turning off your Firewall, then send yourself an HTML Mail. Then do the same with your AV. It could very well be your AV Mail Email scanning.

    And for good measure:
    Close Netscape and Quicklaunch
    Delete your Inbox.msf file

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Hi Ramona...

Well, I tried what you said but it did no good. I was still having the system lockups whenever an "advertisement" e-mail would come in. In fact, after having to shutdown to get out of a lockup, something happened to Netscape and it looks as if everything was set back to defaults! It looked as if it was a fresh install!

So, what I did was backup my mail folder and uninstall Netscape and re-install a fresh copy of the program. It seems to be a bit better now as the "ad" e-mails only take a while to download instead of locking everything up. This was one of the weirdest situations to date with this new computer. I'm at a total loss on what happened here!

As usual, thank you for the help! :-*
