Posted about this problem last week and followed all the advice offered. However, I ended up re-formatting my main drive and re-installing XP Home. Having done this I still had the same error message regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll. Called Microsoft and we went through a chkdsk /r and re-booted but the same problem. Strangely, I can boot into XP from the XP Home CD but, as soon as I try to boot from the hard disk I get the same message.

I have a Pentium 4 processor, 1,024mb memory, a 120gb western digital drive (with XP installed), a western digital 40gb drive (for documents) and a chaintech motherboard.

    Any clues?

    Thanks in advance as always,

    Ron.

Have you tried repairing your boot.ini ? Seems to be the general concensus that this is often the cause of the error. It does seem rather unlikely though, after going through a format. Did you ever make an XP bootdisk. If so, have you tried booting to windows using it?

    Zander,

Thanks for the advice. I have been down this route all to no avail.

If your problem is a missing or corrupt .dll file go to this site and you can download and install any missing .dll file. I hope this will solve your problem once and for all.

Ron - I found This rather interesting 'fix' from microsoft.

Boot from a 98 or ME floppy and then
sys c: and try your install again as a fresh install.

The really strange part to me is they recommend it for your error even on a system with a fresh, clean XP load as well as those being upgraded from 98/ME.

You say that you can boot to windows from the cd so apparently the dll isn't missing. Can you post the contents of your boot.ini so we can have a look at it? Also, how many hardrives do you have and how many partitions on each? Which drive is Windows installed on?

    Solved!

Their was a remnant of a previous installation of Windows XP on the slave drive. When I disconnected the slave drive the system booted perfectly, reconnected it didn't. A quick format followed by reloading my files onto the slave drive and all is well.

    Thanks for all the advice,

    Ron.

Thanks for posting back with the fix. Don't know about anybody else here, but that would have never occurred to me. A good one for the archives.
