If this just happened, Restart in Dos Mode, type in scanreg /restore, press enter. Use the arrow keys to pick a registry dated before this happened.

Sometimes this can happen if you have uninstalled a program that associated itself with those file types.

I had this happen with winamp once - removed it and all of my music files were no longer associated with a program. I had to go back into Winndows Media Player and make it the default player for all my files again.

You may try looking through Media Player to see if you can make it the default player for all media types.

My first reply seems not to have been sent so here it is again.

Thanks for the suggestions but no joy so far. All media types are down as defalts.

    Here is the error message:

    playing 'file://E:\Track01.cda'
    Unable to play 'file://E:\Track01.cda'.
    Reported errors:
ModSet (MOD music files) - Mod file error: Unknown file format ('file://E:\Track01.cda')
WaveSet (wave files) - unsupported file format

Other music players give similar messages. The CD player does read data perfectly well.

I had that same problem with .cda's after an overlay install of windows. Found there was no .cda key in the registry at HK_CLASSES_ROOT. Added the key and before I was able to do research to figure out what values to add, I tried playing them again, and they worked. Went back to regedit and found values had been added automatically. Didn't seem right but I didn't question it either. They played again and thats all that mattered.

Here is something to try. Go into Control Panel\Add Remove Programs. Click on Windows Setup tab, then double click the Multimedia line. Another window will open, uncheck CD Player and Sound Recorder. Then Apply. Get out of there and reboot. Then go back in and add them back. You may need your win CD, or know the location of the setup files.

    Hi everyone

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, nothing has worked so far. The .cda key is in the registry. I tried the "Add/Remove" tip without success.

The message in MS Media Player is more or less this:

"A Scheme that is not recognised by MS Media Player. "

I am kind of stumped on this message. I googled it, using different variations. I can only guess that you have DRM [Digital Rights Management encryption scheme] problems, or you have a corrupt audio codec. Sorry this is not much help.
Does Win98's CDPlayer work at all?
