    Hello all,

I've got a Compaq Deskpro EN computer and want to increase its memory. It currently has 128Mb of RAM, with the following details:

    Hyundai chips
    Compaq 140133-001 on a label
    128MB, SYNC, 133MHz, CL3 on another label
    OW0114006TP on the barcode label

I've hunted about on Ebay and the internet, and am now wondering whether I must only get additional RAM with a Compaq label on it? Or can I get any other RAM with the same speed (133MHz) and CL3 type?

Can anyone explain further the compatibility requirements of my system?

    Merry Christmas!!

    Hi Dodge
I would suggest you go here:

    http://www.crucial.com/

Follow the prompts to lead you to the model of Compag computer you have.

    Crucial gurantees compatibility.

    They have free shipping :)

They make good memory, been using them for years.

Merry Christmas to you too :D

    Cheers, Daddad,

I checked the site, and will check in more detail after Christmas.

Thanks a lot. Have a good one.

    Hi Dodge

it's worth being careful with Compaq memory - when I looked into upgrading the (EDO) RAM on my Compaq Prolinea I wondered why the "true" Compaq modules were far more expensive than others which matched size speed etc...

...discovered that the Compaq modules run on a different supply voltage (2.7V), as opposed to other manufacturers' (3.3V)

so when they say "replace only with Compaq part..." on the little sticker, in this case it really means it!

    bets wishes, HJ.

Compaq can get picky about the RAM modules. Just get the module for a supplier that guarantees compatibility, not just warrants the operability.

The RAM could be operable, but incompatible. I've run across this before.

Thanks for the help here :)

I was wondering whether there would be an "incompatibility" thing with non-generic systems, and it seems that I was right. So basically I must purchase Compaq-compatible RAM?

Where is the best place to find this for a Compaq Deskpro EN?

    FWIW
I'd buy the ram from Crucial. They're a division of Micron. Micron manufactures memory and it's quite possible (though not certain) the memory that's in your computer was manufactured by them. I would guess they're well aware of any special needs that a particular computer has. I've bought a lot of memory from Crucial and have never had a problem. As Daddad said, they guarantee compatibility. Compaq costs more because it's from Compaq. Simple as that. They don't manufacture it, only sell it.

    Hi again,

Crucial may be the place to buy from, and I have had a look at their site. However, I live in the U.K. and their prices are shown in dollars (which I assume means that they are located in the U.S.)

Are they indeed a U.S. based company? If so, do they sell in the U.K.? Does anyone know of a place based in my country who sell guaranteed RAM in the same way that Crucial do?

    Dodge :)

EDIT: Eeh, I can be a giddy goat sometimes... ;) I checked their site again, found the United Kingdom country selection and had another look. I've contacted them to check that the memory I already have is the correct type, and am waiting for their reply.

    Daddad,

Thanks for the quick reply (I only just beat you to it with my EDIT ;) ) - I need to spend a bit more time looking at their site.

I'll keep in touch when all is well (still need to replace hard disk and upgrade to 600MHz CPU when I've got a heatsink and fan) and let you know what happened.
