    Hi,

As always in times of need I have looked through the forum to try to solve a problem. However, this time to no avail. I have a corrupted hal.dll and have tried the various remedies on here, i.e. recovery console, fixboot etc but I still can't solve the problem. Is my only answer a re-format? Has anybody else had to go to this length to solve the problem and, importantly, did it work?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Ron.

Since this file is so critical to hardware configuration, I would do a repair installation. When XP tells you that it is "missing ", I think it may be understating the seriousness of the situation.

These are relatively painless, allow the machine to redetect hardware, and the only real downside, since all your apps and settings are saved, is that you need to reinstall the Windows Updates.

    hal.dll

Tried kellys-corner and a repair instal of XP. Looks like I need to re-format the drive and do a complete re-install of XP. Anyone know what might have caused the problem in the first place?

Thanks for the advice so far,

    Ron.
