    Happy New Year

    I have:
    WIN 98 4.10.1998
    13 gig hd (8 free)
    256 RAM
    AMD K62-400
    2 USB ports
    Ali M1541 chipset

Trying to hook up a Kodak Easyshare DX4530 5 megapixel dig camera

Have talked for hours with Kodak support and they can't help. Problem is when you connect camera and go to transfer pictures the software freezes. Have to CAD and it says not responding. Kodak thought it was the camera or usb cable but this is the 2nd cam and cable now. You mention in other posts about usb problems with WIN 98. I've never used the usb on comp before. USB is enabled in BIOS and shows up under Device Mgr as

    Universal serial bus controller
-ALi USB to PCI Open Host Controller
    -USB Root Hub

There aren't any question marks, etc and properties says both are working properly. I have read about adding new usb items or updating BIOS setting, etc but don't know where to go from here. Use an external card reader? Thanks a lot. Have really appreciated your help in the past.

I have an Olymbus and had nothing but problems with the software. Bought an external card reader(usb) for under $15. Super fast and alot easier. Just stick the card in, and go through windows exlorer.

But don't you have to use the usb to connect the card?

Yes, you do, but the PC then should see the card as an external hard drive and you can copy the image files directly to a folder on your hard drive without using the Kodak Easyshare software. Transfer rates are much higher too.

Sounds like the Kodak software is conflicting with some other software on your PC.

So that would let me know if it truly is a usb problem, if it wouldn't let me even hook up a card, right?

Yes, probably. But I did everything to try and use the camera software and nothing worked properly. When I finally got it to work(somewhat), it took forever to upload pics to the puter. Once I got the card reader, it used the full speed cability of my puter. But I would lean towards a software problem, not the usb port.

I too have the same Kodak camera.
    I am using win2k Pro.

First of all, do NOT install Kodak entire software package, all you need to install is the KODAK Camera Connection Software "connection software" as they call it. Go to the Kodak site and get the updated version of the connection software for win 98.

Uninstall the Kodak software you have previously installed.

Run the new install program and then hook up the camera. You shopuld automatically see the "windows has detected new hardware" prompt and it will load the Kodak necessary drivers.

The link you have only goes to Mac downloads and I can't seem to locate just the conn software for Win. Oops. Just talked to Kodak and he said it's available in the complete easyshare 3.2 download. Just selecting "custom" on install and only selecting the connection software as you said.

Also, then what do you use to store and edit pictures besides the Kodak software if you don't have the complete Kodak on your comp? Thanks!

Just downloaded the connection software only and connected the camera, opened My Comp and clicked on the camera drive. When it opened with the jpgs listed i clicked on one and it froze up. Will definitely get the card reader.

    1. The link is NOT for MAC only. If you click the checkbox next to MAC it will d/l the MAC version, but the default d/l is for Windows.

    2. Click on the drive to see the images in the folder. Then drag the images to your desktop or another folder. The 'crash' you get can be due to low battery power in camers, operating system resources too low or corrupted operating system files from spyware or other software installs.

    3. i use Paint Shop Pro 7.4 to edit images. But any graphics editor that can open jpeg images will suffice. You probably already have one installed somewhere.

I finally picked up a PNY card reader. Was on with MS support for 2 hrs getting comp up and running again after the Kodak easyshare sw mess. Even with just the connection sw. So it's all cleaned up and I just loaded Pny 2.0 Card Reader for WIN 98, supporting usb 1.1 and 2.0. Everything loaded fine and in My Comp it reads as removable disk (D:) just like they said. (Booted with nothing connected, installed the program, rebooted and conn. the reader and rebooted again and then put in the SD card and nothing happened.)

In Dev Mgr under Hard Disk Controllers there is a USB Storage Drive listed . Then there is the USB Controller with 3 sub entries:
-Ali PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    -USB Card Reader
    -USB Root Hub

Don't know if this is right or even helpful to the discussion. Not very much help with PNY pkg or website.

Missed this: if I click on the reader in My Comp it opens to a file called DCIM. Click this and it opens 100K4530. Click this and it opens up the pictures on the reader! I guess I assumed as soon as I pushed in the SD card that something would open up on the desktop. Maybe there's a way to do this? Or to have them go right in to My Pictures folder? Thanks.

Just by inserted the card, nothing will happen. Think of it like a floppy, put it in nothing happens until you try to look at it. You can can drag and drop the pics via windows explorer into your folder.

You could try putting an autorun.inf file on the card along with an image viewer application such as one of those viewers that come on picture cds.
