I previously ran N/S 7.1 under W98 for several years, but now I've upgraded to W2K it will not run despite an uninstall and new dowwnload. I'm using Internet Explorer with no problems.
When I double click on the desktop ikon, all it does is flash up the file location.
    Any suggestions?
    David

    Hi David,

There is a bug in the Netscape 7.1, and Mozilla 1.4 installer, which fails to delete the GRE folders. The installer fails to add the registry key needed to find the GRE folder, if a GRE folder exists. This stops Netscape 7.1, or Mozilla 1.4 from launching. Netscape 7.1 shares the 1.4 GRE simply because they share the same source code of which 7.1 is built.

This issue has been addressed in Mozilla 1.5, as well as the Netscape 7.1 Resource Leak. You may want to consider moving to Mozilla 1.5.

    This is the workaround:

    Back up your Profiles Folder(s)
    Back up your Plugins Folder(s)
    Using the Add/Remove applet:
    Uninstall Netscape 7.1
    Uninstall Mozilla 1.4 (if installed)

    Delete the following folders:
    ~\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\
    ~\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE
~\Program Files\mozilla.org\ (if you unzipped, or installed Mozilla)

    Clear the C:\WINDOWS\temp folder

    Reboot your PC

Post back with any further questions.

    Netscape 7.1 and new download

Thanks Ramona. That did the trick! But why does N/S continue to issue a buggy program?

    Hi David,

Great to hear you are up and running!
As you may, or may not know, Netscape 7.1 is the final version of Netscape, as it is now defunct. There will be no bug fixes, and no further updates. Therefore, it's live with the serious resource leak, and installer bug, or move on...

This is why I usually suggest moving up to Mozilla 1.5, as it is almost identical to the Netscape browser, with the exception of being faster, more stable, without any AOL fluff, and in my thinking, a superior browser. I now use Mozilla 1.6b which is excellent, and looking forward to the 1.6 final release.
