    Hi there,

I've got a Pentium 3 CPU which runs at 450MHz (an old one, I know!) and have bought a 600MHz CPU as an upgrade.

But I'm stuck, cos I don't know how to remove the heatsink as I don't want to break it.

    Can anyone help?

Gateway and several other OEM assemblers used bonded heatsinks with a fan duct so that the case or power supply fan also served as the CPU fan. While care use of needle nose pliers can release the plastic retention system, it will often not ever be the same should you try to mount it to a different CPU.

AS for your p3 600 - it had better be a Katami based Core rated at 2.0v and 100FSB with 512cache if its going on a board that used a p3-450.

A 600E or 600EB processor is not compatable with that board.

I would recommend a good aftermarket CPU fan/heatsink assy, even the ducted fan systems have CPU fan power connectors on the motherboard.

Edit: The hot setup for a slot one board is a "Slot-T" adaptor. I upgraded my p3-450 to a 1.3GHz

    Thanks for the reply,

My CPU has a heatsink/fan on it which is powered from a small connector on the mainboard. I managed to remove the fan part (which was quite easy), but am still not completely confident about removing the heatsink itself.

You mention using needle nosed pliers, but where do I need to use them? There are four plastic pillars; on the side which is plastic (CPU on reverse side, that is), the pillars do not protrude, and are about the size of a ballpoint nib. The other side (the heatsink side) has a strange system to hold the heatsink on.

The P3-600 CPU has the following markings on its edge:

    600/512/100/2.05V S1
    99360001-0201 MALAY
    --- '98 SL3JM

where the --- are three characters; an upside down "! ", an "m" in a circle, and a "c" in a circle.

The inscription on the CPU itself is:

    7931A568

Hope this gives you more of an idea what my predicament is. I don't want to break the CPU/heatsink by not understanding how they should be separated...

Yep thats a good Katami CPU.

You would use the pliers on the black plastic "half shell" side where the black plastic pins come thru. There are 4 holes where they come thru.

    Thanks, guys! :)

I'll give it a try and hope for the best - I'm a little scared about getting too brutal with this CPU (cost > £200 when new).

On another note, where could I buy a suitable new heatsink and fan for a P3-600 CPU?

    EDIT: Oops, should've mentioned, it's a Slot 1 CPU...

    PeteC,

Thanks for that. I checked their site, but can only seem to find heatsink/fans for Pentium 4 and the newer CPUs, nothing for Pentium 3 CPUs. There must be some place somewhere that have the heatsink/fan unit that I (and probably other people) need for upgrading?

Does anyone else know a supplier for my needs? :)

    Cheers PeteC,

This is quite the kind of thing I am looking for, and I will follow this line later on.

    Happy New Year!
