I just changed ISPs...I was able to receive, but not send e-mail in Netscape 7.0. I downloaded 7.1, and something happened. My Inbox wouldn't open. The much smaller folders, like drafts, would open, but not Inbox, Sent or Trash. I went to the ?directory?...Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ etc... and my Sent and Inbox files are huge---300,000 and 100,000) I honestly don't think I had that much in them. I delete pretty regularly. I've had problems with directories---for some reason a second version is created sometimes (....pop.prodigy.yahoo.com to pop.prodigy.yahoo-1.com---if that makes any sense---could that be part of the problem?) Anyway, is there any way to retrieve my inbox/sent material.

    Welcome to the Forum, overload!

    Hi overload,

First, I have a few questions for you:

Did you install Netscape 7.1 on top of 7.0?
Did you create a new Profile for 7.1, or are you using the same Profile?

Let us know, and we can go from there...

I'm not sure about the installation---what does that mean---install on top of? I just went to the Netscape download site and downloaded it. I still have Netscape 7.0 on my screen, so I'm guessing maybe it was not on top of 7.0.
No, I don't think I created a new profile---maybe one was created for me...in my Local Mail directory

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ "myname "\pguy0eb1.slt-new\Mail\pop.prodigy.yahoo.com

    but I also have

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ "myname "\pguy0eb1.slt-new\Mail\pop.prodigy.yahoo-1.com (with the -1)

I also have a directory without the "new" after the slt

Following one of your help sites, Ramona, and others, I did go into the directory, rename Inbox and Sent as inbox.txt and sent.txt---and it rebuilt them both---so I can see them! I wonder if I should delete some of the folders...and what happend to the directory going to Program Files---Mail, etc? I'm not even sure how to create a new profile. Some success---but I still can't send messages on Netscape 7.1. I still have Communicator 4.7---and I can send messages on that---at the same settings. Sorry this is so long---thanks for the help!

    Hi overload,

What I'm asking, is if you first uninstalled Netscape 7.0, before installing Netscape 7.1. Some of the files in Netscape 7.1 are incompatible with older versions of Netscape, and can cause problems.... Thus, the need to uninstall any existing older versions of Netscape 7, before installing 7.1.

Click on the "Help" Tab, and select:
    About Netscape
What version of Netscape does it show? Post back with the information, please.
Which folder actually contains your current mail:
    pop.prodigy.yahoo.com
    or
    pop.prodigy.yahoo-1.com ?

You can open the Inbox with NO MSF extension in Notepad or if too large, in Wordpad.

What Mail Account folders are contained in the Profile named:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ "myname "\pguy0eb1.slt\Mail\pop.prodigy.yahoo.com
    (without the "new ")?

When you determine which Mail Account Folder (pop.prodigy.yahoo.com, pop.prodigy.yahoo-1.com, etc.)
    Then Open Netscape
    Open: Mail & Newsgroups
Open: Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
Scroll to the bottom of the Window to the "Local directory" setting.
Ensure that the path points to the Mail Account folder which actually contains your Netscape 7 Mail.
    Post back with the results

Don't delete any folders until you have your current Mail in the proper folder.
None of the instructions on my pages suggest naming the Mail files with a ".txt" extension. If you renamed the Inbox and Sent files without the MSF extension, then I would remove the ".txt" extension, and instead rename them XInbox and XSent, without an extension.

There should be NO Netscape 7 Mail folders in the C:\Program Files. That Mail folder is for Netscape Communicator 4.7x.
This is a page explaining the process for creating a new Profile:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/NS7newprofile.html
This may be the best way out of the situation you are in now. However, I need a little more information from you first. We need to establish:
    A. which Version of Netscape you have.
    B. which folders contain your current Netscape 7 Mail
    C. If using the correct "Local directory" path allows access to the current mail

You might read over the info in the Create a New Profile page, but please do nothing until you check back here...

    Hello!

I must have installed 7.1 on top of 7.0 When I go to Help>>>About Netscape---I see it's 7.1---that happens even when I click on the shortcut for 7.0.
I did not create a new profile.

The folder that contains my mail is in pop.prodigy.yahoo.com

So what will happen if I rename Sent and Inbox (without the MSF extentions) from sent.txt and inbox.txt to Xsent and Xinbox?

    Thanks!

    Hi overload,

I would recommend that you do a Clean Install of Netscape 7.1
    as described here:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns67cleaninstall.html
You will need to follow the directions in Step one and Step Two.

The Mail files are text files, and they will copy with that .txt extension, but I would be concerned about corruption unless the proper format is used. Your choice...
