    Hello!
I knew it wouldn't take me long before I had to post in the XP forum! I have a Diamond SupraExpress 56K Voice/Data modem that is currently recognized as a data modem only. I need to be able to use the voice functionality as it serves as my answering machine.

Windows automatically finds it upon reboot but continually installs the improper driver (SupraMax 56i Data). If I try and update the driver, Windows informs me that the current driver is better.

Any suggestions before I pull my hair out??

I think that particular device is a WinModem meaning it relies heavly on the PC to think for it.

Based on some personal experience with Winmodems and numerous discussions here and other forums, there is no way I'd ever consider using one. So please bear that in mind (that I greatly dislike the things) when I recommend that you get rid of it completely and go with an external modem that will do your voice & data.

Failing in that, you might try removing it from device manager, shutting down and removing it completely, starting back up and then shutting down again.

Try now installing the modem in a different slot (even if you have to swap other boards around), booting up, and demanding that XP use a driver set you specify. Maybe as high as a 50/50 chance this will work.

How do you "demand" XP to use a driver set? Upon changing the slots and rebooting, the hardware wizard autonmatically finds the SupraMax and there is no choice as to which drivers to use.

The SupraExpress is not a winmodem.
Once it's installed incorrectly, open device mangler, highlight your modem, select properties, go to the driver tab, and select Update Driver. Windows may balk about not the correct driver, but you should still be able to continute and install whatever you want.

Oops. Thanx reboot. I must have looked too quickly first time around. Certainly isn't a winmodem.

I do think (if I read better this time) that it allows flash firmware updates though so if there is one out there ....

Well I did finally get it to work. WinXP would only recognize XP drivers (this modem came with only 9x/NT drivers) so I have it installed as a SupraExpress Pro V CC V.92 modem (which it is not!). It was the only XP driver I could find that had voice capability. After about 6 hours of frustration and numerous failed installs I'm just glad I got it working.

I appreciate everyone's input and I'm sure I'll be back many times as I play and fiddle with this new system.

    Thanks again!

    :)
