Slow reading of mapped drive with XP

I have a small peer to peer network with 4 machines. The "file server" is a 2k Pro machine and we have 2 XP Pro machines and a 98SE machine connected to it and each other via mapped drives. We used TCP/IP with netbios enabled (no NetBui) with auto IP address (our ISP won't work with fixed IP). No real problems here, although as we added the XP machines we noticed they were much slower reading the mapped "X" drive on the server.

I recently replaced the 98SE machine with another XP Pro machine and it works fine, except when trying to read files from ONE of the other two XP machines. It connects and sees the directory structure, but if I try to view the 50 files in a small directory, it can take a half hour!

I have tried the following without success:

1. Turned off file indexing on all of the XP machines.
2. Deleted the "problem" NameSpace key in the registry.
3. Tried both simple and specific file sharing.

Anyone out there had this problem or have any suggestions?

How are you connecting the PCs to the ISP for internet access?

What workgroup name are you using and do all PCs have the exact same one?

When you post that answer, please also post the IP setups for your PCs. Don't mask any settings please. Easiest is to do the following on each PC and post the resulting text files with some way for us to know which machine produced which results.

start~run~cmd followed by
ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt (and note you will not see any results on screen since they are re-directed to the text file).

 

1. Each PC connects to a 10/100 hub. That hub connects to a router/firewall, which is connected to my cable modem.
2. Each PC is in the workgroup "@home ".
