    Hi kimmy-b!

I assume that You are using either Norton Internet Security or Norton System Works.

ccApp is the common client that manages and monitors these applications. I think that it primarily is in play when the applications are loading at start up.
It is known to cause trouble on some systems and can be very slow to unload at shut down.

If I´m on the right track, try uninstalling NIS / NSW and reinstall it again.

I don´t think that the stand alone Norton Anti Virus has ccApp but I´m not sure.

    HTH,
    Christer

Hi Christer.. thanks for the reply. I use Norton AntiVirus 2004 that I downloaded from their site. It updated the version that came installed on my system. I wondered if that ccapp thing had something to do with the antivirus. It seems that when I leave the automatic update turned on, my troubles get worse. I've turned that off and do the updates when I think of it. So now I can't figure out why I'm getting that message again. Know anything about the NAV 2004?
    thanks again!

Me again... I checked the Symantec site. It may have something to do with the NAV scanning the floppy drive every time it shuts down, so they suggested turning that option off. I did, so we'll see what happens.
    thanks again!

    kimmy_b,
    You´re welcome!

From this I´ve learned that ccApp is involved in the stand alone NAV too and thats good to know. I should have figured it out though, since NAV has several components.

I myself have NIS2003 and NSW2003 and I don´t know which the specific differences are compared to the 2004 versions.

Well, no luck. I got up this morning to find that same darn message and everything is frozen. I have to power down and then reboot. Not sure what to try next??

Did you uninstall and reinstall Norton, like Christer suggested? An email to Symantec might be a good idea if you still have the error after trying that.

To expand on information given so far:
    ccapp.exe is...

Symantec’s Common Client Application for Norton AntiVirus 2003/4, Norton Personal Firewall 2003/4, and Norton Internet Security 2003/4. This task is, effectively, the "master" task in these products as its role is to call the different program features of the above products. For example, if Auto-Protect and E-mail Scanning are enabled, then CCAPP makes sure that those programs are running. If CCAPP is disabled, then Auto-Protect and Email Scanning will not run.

    ============
NOTE* Something to think about: the error may not be caused by Norton but by the module "unknown ". In other words something, be it software or hardware, is not getting along with a Norton Task. In otherwords these two components ie;1)Norton plus 2) "unknown ", do not work or play well with each other.

Problem is, this could be one of the components of Norton, hence the suggestion to uninstall/reinstall, or something else you have as a startup load or is running at shutdown.

    To sum up...
Your solution will be found when you find out what you have loading or running or have Norton doing that conflicts with the "unknown ". Or have eliminated the possibility of a corrupted file in the Norton program components.

Keep in mind that this could also boil down to one of those memory clashes which can happen from time time if you have not adopted a good general house cleaning maintenance routine or have procrastinated in doing so for a while. Clean temps, empty trash, ran scandisk, defrag, checked for file corruption via SFC, ran your adaware program of choice, made sure you have plenty of freespace, ran your (computer manufacturer, mscom, graphics/sound board etc) support site update/patch checks for both hardware and software etc etc....

Plenty of goodies with sublinked advice in the archived posts via the "search button" on the above^.

thanks for all the replies!! I guess I have been a bit lax about the housekeeping on this thing. I do routinely do the clean-up, defrag and all that, but since I can't remember the last time I did it, I'm guessing it's been awhile. I'll try that after work tonight and see if that helps. I'm also pretty sure the Norton doesn't like a game I downloaded since I seem to have more trouble when I play that stupid thing. All this help is great!!!:D
