    Hello,

When I right click to "View Source" on web pages, I get the hour glass, but it doesn't open. It used to work. Any ideas???

I'm using Windows XP Home IE6.0

    Thanks

    Angela

    Hello
When not at the site your wanting to view source
    1. Clear the IE cache. IE> Tools> Options> General> Delete files (and delete
offline content.) It's often recommended that the TIF folder be kept at
20-30 MB. Bigger isn't necessarily better.
    2. If you have a shortcut to Notepad.exe on the desktop, rename it. any shorcuts to a notepad documents move them elswhere
    3. Is notepad.exe undamaged and installed to the proper directory?

    Additional information at
    http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#view_source
    and

artuck--Is this happening at all sites?
I find that View Source does not work here (WindowsBBS) but does most other sites. Believe I read somewhere that WindowsBBS is set up not permit View Source to work.

Check IE's programs tab>html editor. I believe the success or failure of the "view source" check is going to be based on this editor.
(Barring a sites own policy for allowing this)

    Sorry Lonny,

I see you more than had this covered. That's what I get for reading and posting and waiting until after doing so to follow the sublinks in the post.

Guess I need an atidote for Tryptophan OD. Turkey can be a terrible thing.....:D

My "default" setting for IE HTML Editor is MS Front Page Editor. The alternative offered was NotePad. I tried switching to that. No difference here on WindowsBBS. No problems at other sites. Sicne I really do not care to see source code here, no problem.

Gee I wouldn't say covered,,I look at it tis way,, the more people
    making suggestions the better.

I just thought also theres a variant of coolwebsearch (hijacker/trojan that effects IE's source code editors..

Angela are there any other symptoms,, even if they seam unconnected?
what editor do you have setup ?
do you also have front page installed ?

I Don't have a use for editing html now the no how, just some links we have gatherd..Others here can and do edit html..

some sites do put a block on or restrict this function,
at others our edit button is dimmed out also the edit on the file context is dimmed,, but I can go view source or right click.

I have ultraedit32 set to be the default, though manual tweeks, and notepad set as the second choice..again not that I can make heads or tails of source
Jim you should be able to see source on the main page ,, even this topic,, before starting a reply that is..
    regards
    Lonny
I take that back on the main page I cannot view source

    I just noticed something interesting....

When first responding to this thread, I was able to view source without a problem. I just checked again, out of curiousity, planning on switching between my two possibilities, Notepad and MSWord. I discovered I could no longer view source. Nothing happened.

    Emptied Temp...nothing happened.

    Changed security settings...nothing happened.

Changed encoding from windows euro iso to windows western and bam! View Source was attainable and functioning.

    Wonder why???

    Ann,
Weird. My encoding is set at windows euro iso. Source works fine on the home page, thread pages...

I did notice, at the time, that Frontpage, which I installed only a few months ago, decided to be my default editor instead of Notepad and I had to change it back. I don't use "view source" very often, okay, well close to never, but I don't seem to be having any problems. I checked a couple of random sites, and all popped up right away. Someone post some links for sites they can't view source on. Just wondering why it works for some, not others.

Back to the original question, Angela, you said you get an hourglass, but no response. Try it from "view" on the toolbar.

Must have something to do with IE Cache. I discovered I didn't need to change encoding setting. All I had to was click "refresh" for the page.

Guess "encoding change" also forces a refresh which is why doing this also allowed the "view source" to function.

Now here's something strange. I have no problems viewing source on most pages but when I tried here nothing happened. I did something later that required a reboot and when I reopened IE it went straight to this page and notepad popped up with source page.

    Hello,

Thanks for all the responses, I haven't had a chance to try anything yet, but I will today. I've been practicing html recently and have been trying to use "view source" as a learning tool. I've been practicing in notepad, even though I downloaded an html editor that was freeware(called Ace something). I haven't really used it.

I do have notepad as a shortcut on my desktop, but was able to view source in the past.

also unable to view source code

View|Source has always worked for me (IE 6.0.2800). Now it does not work at all. It cannot be a problem with the website's own settings as my own sites will not display source either. Hmmm???

Wonder if Microsoft has changed something in IE???

    Problem solved

I found another thread with the solution (which was also in this thread but I had not yet tried it). Cleaned out the Temporary Internet files (Tools|Internet Options} and it works fine. Thanks for the assistance.

goddez1 --Great!! Western European (Windows) now allows View Source to work for me, too. Windows BBS threads were one of the few places where View Source has not worked for me in the past. (View Source works fine on the WindowsBBS forum and thread list pages and most other websites.)
I have View|Encoding set at Auto Select and it chooses Western European (ISO) for me for all WindowsBBS pages, so it is not AutoSelect choosing different encodings for threads versus lists.

FWIW, I never have been able to view the source code of these web pages. Three different computers and several different versions of IE and it's always been the same. I have an edit toolbar button that's always greyed out at this sight. If I click on the view menu, source isn't greyed out but nothing happens when I click on it. Same thing on some other sights but most work fine. Some of those that don't work will work if I click the refresh button but nothing gets this sight to work. Wierd.

Zander--The key seems to be to set View|Encoding to Western European (Windows). Then either click View|Source or right click on a blank spot on a WindowsBBS page and choose "View Source ".

Western European (Windows) did the trick for me too. Was set to ISO and nothing happened when trying to view source. Now wondering why it didn't work when I tried it before. Thanks goddez1!

Strange. On this sight if I change to Western European (Windows) the edit button changes so I can click on it but it only sticks for about 5 seconds and then changes back to Western European ISO. If I click on the edit button during the time it's not greyed out nothing happens. If I leave this sight and change it to WE(W) it seems to stay there just fine. As soon as I come back to this sight the button becomes unavailable after about 5 seconds or so again. If I then check the encoding I find it's once again set itself back to WE(I). Go figure. Oh well, I can live with it but it sure makes you wonder what's going on.

Zander--Just guessing. On View|Encoding do you have AutoSelect checked?
