One of the features in XP is that it will autohide infrequently used icons in the system tray. For some reason this has stopped working? I've gone into the Properties of taskbar to make sure this was checked - it is. Anyone know why this has stopped working or how I can get it to work again?

Try deleting these 2 registry keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
    entVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify\PastIconsStream

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
    entVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify\IconStreams

TY for the suggestion - not sure I'm confident enough to go into registry and delete things though...:(

Sometimes stuff happens. I go into the start menu and task bar options and open the hide icons folder. Then I find the icon and change the options around . All your trying to do is get the apply button to ungray . Then I hit apply and ok out of there. This always works for me. I am usually loosing the icons. Or log out and log back in. I've had it happen when I'm updating drivers or windows.

If you have XP Pro, try this:

    Start > Run:
    gpedit.msc

    Navigate to:
Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

In the right pane, look for "Turn off notification area cleanup ".

The default for this setting is: Not Configured.

If it is anything else, double-click it and change it.

    EDIT:
After some searching, it turns out that this policy setting in Home Edition corresponds to the presence of this key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoAutoTrayNotify

Go to Start > Run and type:
    regedit

Navigate to that key and if present, right-click on NoAutoTrayNotify and delete it.

    Try registering stobject.dll.

Go to Start > Run, and type:

    regsvr32 stobject.dll

    Be sure that:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\EnableAutoTray has a value of 1.

(I'm really shooting in the dark now ;) )

    Hi deanst2 & beamuse,
Once you're in the Properties of taskbar, click on "Customize ". You'll be able to customize the behaviour for each icon. Make sure they're "hide when inactive ". If you have to, change some and then click OK.

Thnx for replying leelee but that is not my problem. I want to get rid of all the past icons that are on that list from programs that I don't even have in my computer anymore. Yes, they are hidden but they are still on the 'Past Items' list

beamuse: Now I get what your drift. First, follow Abraxas's steps
    Then,

    1. Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe, and then click End Process.

    2. In Task Manager, click File, click New Task, type explorer, and then click OK.

    I got this from here.

I tried it and it worked. Good luck.

I tried that method, too. And strangely, it didn't remove any past icons.

It has worked for me in the past, so no idea why it doesn't work now. It only managed to randomize the icons among the past items. Even a restart after clearing those reg keys did not remove them.

I'm beginning to wonder when this all happened. There were many complaints of unstable trays before SP1, and it may have been that long since I cleared my list (I use SystrayX). Maybe they sneaked a fix in there somewhere and changed the way these things are stored.
