When I click on My Computer, Windows Explorer, or my dialup connection, explorer refreshes/resets itself (I assume it is a reset since all my system tray icons disappear and then only a few come back.) All my desktop icons will disappear for a second, and then come back.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP1 with all updates.
    Any Help appreicated.

The "blink" of XP desktop icons is normal, but I am concerned with:
Which ones are disappearing, and do they return at some point?

My DU Meter, iTouch for my keyboard, Yahoo messenger & Y!tunnel (when I have them on that is). My other icons (Zonealarm, speaker, DUN connection, Bellsouth web accel).

I used to have this problem with win98, and this would happen right after I got a BSoD for explorer.exe

Was XP a clean, fresh install or did you update over the 98 load that had the problem?

Ran across this tweak for w9x's.....

Stop the desktop from refreshing so often
Have you ever noticed that when you close a window that the computer hesitates while windows "refreshes" all of the Desktop Icons. This is because the ShellIconCache file has reached it's limit of 500 entries. To stop this run Regedit and open the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer
and create a new string value. Name it Max Cached Icons and then set the value to 2000

Sounds similar, would not apply until further blessed by others.

I've had this setting for a while and I haven't noticed any problems with desktop icons refreshing themselve. Xp pro sp1a.

Dennis L - that particular tweak has been around since (as you noted)9X days. It seems to either help or do nothing so I'd say it's a safe thing to try.

    Please respond to Johanna question:
Do the ones that flash also come back or are they gone for good?

I think the most importatnt quest or focus is in trying to find out if a crash of some kind is going on.

Event viewer may reflect some problems that should be looked at, assuming there is any.

no, the icons that disappear do not re-appear. The program is still running however.

This was a clean XP install, formatted and partitioned as NTFS from FAT32. (I had used the Maxtor zero fill utility to blank the drive before the above.)

    neonhomer,
Have you done the registry tweak Dennis L mentioned?
I also experienced systray icons disappearing during my early XP days. After applying that tweak, it didn't happened again.

Okay, in Event Viewer, I did not notice anything astray. I did apply the registry fix, and I am still having the problem.

I dont get any error messages, no BSoD's, or anything, the desktop just "refreshes ", and some of the system tray icons go away.

I did notice, I am getting DCOM errors under System in the EV.

There are a few of them, the "server" is the only two that are there......

I dont know if this has anything to do with it, but my Control Panel Icons (any anything under control panel i.e. Admin tools), always goes back to "list" mode. I have set it to icon mode numerous times (even setting it, and then closing control panel w/ ctrl held down) and it keeps coming back. Makes me think I should just reload XP.. LOL
