    For the email toolbar button:
In Word, go to View>Toolbars>Customize>Commands tab. In the right-hand pane, scroll down to "New Email Message." Grab it with the mouse (point at it, hold down the left mouse button) and drag it to the toolbar, drop it in. It will not appear until you close the Customize window.

    For scanning documents:
To scan text, you must use OCR (optical character recognition) software. Some sort of OCR software is usually bundled with scanners.

OCR software, even the expensive ($600 range) is notoriously inaccurate. The better the quality of the original...sharp, dark letters on a clean white background, no photocopier smears, etc....the better the scan results. You will inevitably have to correct some of the software's mistakes. The more heavily formatted the original...lines, forms, boxes, etc....the more mistakes the OCR software will make.

 Thanks for the advice but ... although I draged the appointed "new e-mail" to the toolbar o'k it is there but does not allow me to click on it [it is in the shade??]

The second request for the scanned letter to be able to amend/correct!! I do not know which of the document programs to send it to enable me to do so??
Thanks for your time once again

I don't know why the Email button is greyed out. Is there a document, even a blank one, open? A lot of the toolbar buttons are disabled until there's a document open.

In Word, go to File>Send To and click on "Mail Recipient" to see if that works.

You need to use the OCR software when doing the actual scanning. At least, that's the way all the OCR software I've used works.

Look through the software that came with your scanner to see if there's an OCR program included. If so, install it and read its help files to find out how it works.

If not, do a Google search for "OCR software." I doubt you'll find any free ones but you won't know that for sure until you look. ;)

For the email, copied from Word's help files:
To e-mail a message or document in HTML format You need Word 2000 and either Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express 5.0 or later. You must set either Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express 5.0 or later as your default e-mail editor.

That means you need to go into Internet Explorer, then Tools>Internet Options>Programs tab and designate either Outlook Express or Outllook as the default email program. Judging from the above quote, if you use something else for email, you can't send directly from Word.

    For the OCR:
It's been quite a while since I've used Ulead products but I believe after installing their Omni Page software, you just go to the Start menu, open up Omni Page and use it to scan the document. Photo Impact only handles graphics (pictures).
