when i want to use mmc (microsoft management console) to reconstruct or you say, to rearrange my first part of harddrive C:, it doesn't work

so i try to use mmc to rearrange my second part of harddrive I:, it works

that makes me feel strange, by the way, my xp installs on C:

now i use o&o defrag professional edition to reconstruct my C:

is there any way that can make my mmc healthy or can i reinstall my mmc, if can, how to do it

    thanks

If you just want to defragment the drive there are several ways to do it. I usually right-click on My Computer then left-click on manage and select disk defragmenter.

The same thing should certainly work from mmc though if you have that snap in loaded.

If you want to use Disk Management to rearrange drive letters or similar, I don't think it can be done on the system drive using any native XP tool that I'm familiar with.

If you want to do something else then please explain exactly what you want to do.

nn, ok, easily speaking, i want to do defragment to c:, this is where my xp lives, but when i use the disk defragmenter of xp to do that, it doesn't work

so i try it on i:, that is another one, then it works

c: and i: are all in one harddrive, they are two divisions

later, i use another software, O&O Defrag Professional Edition [http://www.oo-software.com], which claims that it can do defragment, after experimental, it really can

can u teach me how to fix my the disk defragmenter of xp or how to reinstall it

or if you have idea that can make this problem simple

    thanks

The XP disk defragmenter certainly should work on your C: drive.

    What happens when you try?

you know that when we use XP disk defragmenter, there are two buttons for us to choice, one is analyze, the other is reconstruct

first, i press button analyze to C:, there's nothing happens

then i press button reconstruct to C:, there's also nothing happens

but both of them, buttons analyze and reconstruct, can work on I:

so i guess my XP disk defragmenter is a little broken, because it can only do its job on I:, but not on C:

can i restall XP disk defragmenter or is there any way that can let me do defragment on C:

    thanks

Do you get a little dialog box telling you the drive does not need to be defragged, or simply no response at all?

Two repair things to try (and in this order)

start~run~cmd followed by chkdsk /r for each of your drives. For instance, chkdsk c: /r.

After you've done that for each drive, verify that you still have the problem. If you do, then
start~run~sfc /scanonce and then reboot. Have your BIOS set to boot from something other than the CD as it's first choice and have your OS CD in the drive.

i tried the first way you said, enter cmd and type chkdsk c: /r, then dos showed

the type of file system is ntfs
    xp can't lock this section
xp can't run chkdsk on this section because there's other procedure running in this section now
would you like to schedule the check of this section after your system reboots next time,

i say yes, then xp says
the check of this section will start when your system reboots next time,

so i restart my pc, after that, before entering xp system, it showed these messages in a blue background with white words

chkdsk is verifying files (stage 1 or 5)
file record segment 73928 is unreadable
file record segment 73929 is unreadable
file record segment 73930 is unreadable
file record segment 73931 is unreadable
chkdsk is verifying indexes (stage 2 or 5)
chkdsk is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 or 5)
chkdsk is verifying file data (stage 4 or 5)
windows replaced bad clusters in file 17247 of name \WINDOWS\system32\wow32.dll
chkdsk is verifying free space (stage 5 or 5)

after these procedures, i enter my xp

now i guess my harddrive rebuilding tool can just work without entering xp, right

do these messages showed tell us that my harddrive is a little broken

after this experiment, should i try the second way you suggest

    thanks

    Yes. Do try the sfc.

I also suggest you run the chkdsk /r once a week for a while and if you see errors on most runs, you have a hard drive going bad and will need to replace it soon.

If it runs with no errors found or fixed, the problem was transient and nothing to worry about.

i tried the second way you said, when restarting xp again, it did the check about the protection of windows' files

during this procedure, except that xp asked me to retry, and i pressed the retry button to let it continued working, there's no error showed after finished

wow, cool, my harddrive rebuilding tool of xp is health now, now i can remove O&O Defrag Professional Edition

i think this problem is just like what you said, transient, although i don't know how sfc /scanonce solves this disaster, it's really useful

    thanks, what a happy day
