I'm working on my brother's computer, and he's got the strangest issues with Internet Explorer. I'm running Windows XP Professional, connected to the internet via cable. The computer is a 1600 MHz Pentium IV with a gig of ram. It's also running the Norton Personal Firewall.

So here's the deal; there should be plenty of clues in this:

    1) Opera works (just takes ages to start-up. Like 4 minutes sometimes. Even after reinstall. Disk drive is totally defragged, as well. But this isn't the main issue)

    2) Mozilla works (except when it crashes)

    3) Internet Explorer does not work when launched from the Start Icon, or shortcut. The browser pops up, but I get the familiar "The page cannot be displayed" error.

HOWEVER, and here's the interesting part, when I browse through files in Windows Explorer and type an http address into the loaction bar, the appropriate web page appears. Internet Explorer is fine this way...with one caveat:

Any time I try to click on a link which opens a new browser window, the DNS error pops up. If I go File -> New Window and type an address in the new window, then it DOES work. Actually, now I don't even get the DNS error anymore; I just get a frozen blank window. I've tried disabling the firewall, just for ****s and giggles, but that had no effect.

There's gotta be enough info in there to figure out what's going on, right? Any ideas?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS,

Have a look at this MSKB Article.

    Get Spybot and AdAware.

After installing, on the startmenu>all programs>spybot>select 'advanced' mode. On settings tab> select settings, scroll down to scan priority, select 'highest'. Scroll to 'expert settings', check the first 3. Then tick the 'online' tab and at top of page 'update'. You may have to select a US mirror from the drop down to download. Close, then reopen (sometimes necessary for updates to install). Now run twice. Select all items and fix.

    Second, update Adaware. Then ........
Make sure the following settings are made and on (green)

From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan "
    Then......
Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" , "Scan active processes ", "Scan registry ", "Deep scan registry" , "Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files "
    Then.....
Go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........ "Cleaning engine" and tick "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot "

Then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.
Run Adaware, delete all it finds. Reboot.

    Hope this helps.

Nope. I've done all that. I did it again, just for safe measure, and rebooted. Same ol' problems. The fact that IE works from the Windows location bar must mean something, no?

Thing is, I don't know how Explorer and all those programs work, but obviously launching IE from the icon triggers a different sequence of events than typing an addy in the Windows Explorer address bar. For whatever reason, the former doesn't work; the latter does.

Here's a full sequence of what works:

Start --> My Computer (or any desktop folder)

Where "My Computer" apepars in the Address bar, I overwrite with "www.google.com" The Google website appears. Everything works EXCEPT links that open new windows.

    Here's what doesn't work:

    Start --> Internet Explorer

That yields: "The page cannot be displayed." Just for safe measure, I tried directly typing in the IE address bar. No dice. Same error.

So, IOW, what the heck's the difference between the way the computer accesses the same program through these two slightly different methods?

Nope. None of those solutions worked either. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE 6.0 SP1. Nada. Tried launching it from Program Files/Internet Explorer, just in case the Start link was pointing to some older version or something. Nope. I'm stumped.

I can't answer the question of why it's working the way it is...well, not exactly.

I do know that the problem you're experiencing is often resolved by downloading and running LSPFix or, if it's XP, WinSockXPFix. They may or may not be the same thing but since once is specified for XP, I've posted links to both.

Hmm, interesting. I just let task mngr run showing processes and noticed accessing the internet via IE it uses iexplore.exe, whereas through My Computer address bar nothing changed. Uses a service already running, perhaps svchost.exe. While opening IE shows 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' at the very top of the page, through My Computer it does not.

I'm curious as to what you did to reinstall/repair IE. Here's how Microsoft says to do it. I have used the registry edit method with success before.

Going to do a little more homework on this. Maybe someone else will have some input in the mean-time.

I reinstalled Internet Explorer SP1 by uninstalling and then reinstalling. After you posted your link, I tried it by doing the regedits. Nothing worked. This is really odd. I cannot understand at all why IE is acting this way.

Here is more. If it has SP1 on the install but no cd with SP1 then point it to windows/driver cache/i386 the newer stuff will be in there. during sfc.

To repair Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x for Windows XP:
Note: Before proceeding, ensure that your Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM is available.

From the Start menu, choose Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow
    Choose the OK button.
Restart the computer when the System File Checker program finishes.

Alternate fix to repair Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x for Windows XP:

Note: Before proceeding, ensure that your Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM is available.

From the Start menu, select Search, and choose Files or Folders.
Select the More Advanced Options item and ensure that there is a checkmark beside the Search hidden files and folder option.
In the Name field, type ie.inf
In the Look in drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Choose the Search Now button. The correct ie.inf file should be located in the Windows\Inf folder.
Using the right-hand mouse button, select the ie.inf file and choose Install from the drop-down menu that appears.
Restart the computer when the computer finishes copying files.

Third option from the cmd or the start run
    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

    regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

Alternate fix to repair Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x for Windows XP:

Did you try the WinSock fix pointed out by Miz? That's one common fix (that I always seem to forget about until I see problems in a HijackThis log) that more often than not applies to this type of problem. Might not be a bad idea to post a HijackThis log. Get it here , run a scan, save the log, open it with notepad and paste it here. DON'T FIX ANYTHING YET! Someone will look it over and tell you what needs fixed.
Have you by chance tried disabling the Norton Firewall?

The only things I see are

    01- mini.aimster.com
    01- www .aimster.com
    03- toolbar(no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)

Not sure about the two 08- AOpenClient entries. No info came up anywhere I looked on them. I personally would delete them, after making a backup of the registry.

Give it some time for someone else more knowledgeable to post in on this. If noone else does, run another scan, put a check beside these items and fix.
