The box I inherited has been great, but have begun upgrading and adding. The BIOS date is 5/99. When I checked with Mfgr., all I got was a hot link to another site doing nothing but selling BIOS updates for a kazillion brands. Never having done a BIOS update before, was surprised to learn they would send what I needed plus a 'pulling' tool and let me do my thing. Sounds weird, as I read repeatedly 'don't mess with stuff out of your experience'.

Question: What other venues for checking on updating the BIOS?
    Thanks.

Just my two cents worth. If everything runs good, don't mess with it. I am running a BIOS dated 2/99. Everything works just fine for me.

Is there something specific that you are looking to get out of the updated BIOS?

Sounds like they are sell you a new BIOS chip. To upgrade the BIOS if there is a newer version for your system there should be some file that you download. With my system I download a file put it on a floppy. Start the system with a startup floppy and then use the BIOS update floppy.

Mike - I'm just told to update the BIOS by technicians who have done hardware work on my system. All seems to working OK! Thanks for your response.

Russ - Yes, they would send me a download too. It just seemed like a "McDonald's" drive-through way to do business, but Hey! What do I know! Thanks!

    dbltrbl,

Glad to add my two cents. If everything is working okay, I'd pass on the BIOS update for now. If needed, you can always add it later. I've added a modem, sound card, hard drive, cable Internet, and a video card to my machine withoutany further updates to my BIOS. I'd hold off.

As you know and as "They" say

I'm of the school of "If it ain't broke-don't fix it." I am kinda leery of BIOS updates as the one experience I had was kinda disastrous. But not being knowlegable in this area you should take this as a FWIW.
