    Win XP Home
    IE 6.0

I have just had to run a Win XP repair and all is back up and running, albeit a little slow. Only two programs starting at bootup are Zone Alarm Firewall and Grisoft AV. The repair was due to a corrupted driver somewhere that was creating the BSOD. Think it was driver for my USB hub but no way to be sure.

I also had a program called Easy Copy 1.0 that someone recommented last summer so that my old UMAX scanner could be used as copier. The shortcut icon on desktop went to blank and program wouldn'twork. I tried to uninstall but first try caused crash with BSOD. Second try got dialog box with cryptic "cannot uninstall, install log corrupted ". I deleted every reference to that program but in the Registry and I am not comfortable in working there, even if I knew where to look.

Now to the original reason for this post. When I boot up I get the dreaded log on box. I canot remember how to disable it. can someomne refresh my memory as well as comment on the other stuff I went on and on about?

Use the logon options of TweakUI for XP to disable startup passwords.

As for the rest---what exactly do you want to do? I followed the saga, but am not sure if you just want to clean out the registry (not really necessary if you have no problems) or are trying to get something to work.

    log on box

I guess I'm wondering how running XP Repair from the same CD that installed the system in the first place would change a number of things. The shut down function changed from a dialog box in center screen with "stand by-shuidown - restart" in it to
a dialog box where one has to scroll down and choose when he wants to do and it now includes the logoff function which formerly was a separate function.

Also how does one uninstall something if the uninstall function will not work? Doing a regedit makes me quite nervous.

I will give Tweak UI a try and I thank you for your kind assistance.

It will "repair" whatever has been damaged since the original installation.

The usual procedure for removing a program with a corrupt or missing installation log is to reinstall the program. The hope is that an installation log will be created or repaired and the uninstallation can then proceed.

If that doesn't work, brute force is the second choice.

This is a simple matter of choosing the Win2000 GUI, or not.

    Log On Box

Tweak.UI does indeed resolve ths log on box problem, but, for whatever reason, it is not permanant. Since my original post and install of Tweak.UI I have had three instances of when I boot up, the log on box will appear and when I go to Tweak.UI, the box I checked to preclude this pest appearing, has become unchecked.

It almost appears as though my system had done a "self-restore ".
Is this something that can happen with System Restore?

    If so, How to correct?

The XP repair returned your registry to default settings. It is not unusual for some software to become damaged after a repair. Since it won't let you uninstall Easy Copy, reinstall it, and reboot. If it doesn't work properly after that, uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reboot. You may have to re-create your desktop icons. I am surprised that you only had difficulty with one application. Good news for you!

In Control Panel, User accounts, you can change the way users log on (with the welcome screen or enabling fast user switching)
If you don't use a log on password, you just click your name on the welcome screen to go to your desktop.

You said in your first post that your comp seems slower. Can you elaborate on that? There might be something you can do to return to your regular performance. Let us know what you are observing, and we might be able to make some specific suggestions. Also, you might want to run your computer through PC Pitstop . Their tests are safe, and the results page will point you toward a solution, if the tests detect a problem.

    LogOnBox

Thanks Johanna, I will give your suggestions a try.

What I really want to be able to do is to power up, go to something else and come back to a PC fully booted to desktop. Tweak.UI has allowed me to this by eliminating the Log On box in any form, but, as I previously stated, that will not hold. Is it possible that this PC will start and run a System Restore on it's own?
I'll do the P C Pitstop thing as I am very familiar and comfortable with it. Just haven't had time to do it yet.
