My computer will not boot properly.

It will not boot at the first try...it hangs and is I try Ctrl+ALT+DEL I get a blue screen telling me the system is busy and the usual *press any key* etc, that never works.

I always have to do a forced shutdown, wait 30 seconds, reboot, run scandisk and then the computer boots.

This has become routine and it is a pain having to go through this routine in order to boot the computer.

Any ides of what is wrong with it??

    Thanks...
(Please don't get too technical as it forces my brain into shutdown when I don't understand the terms.)

When booting right when you see Starting Windows 98, press rapidly on the F8 key to bring up the Start Menu, or go Start\Run type in Msconfig and press Enter, click on Advanced and put a check on Enable Startup Menu. At the Startup Menu, choose the Logged Option. It will create the file C:\Bootlog.Txt. Post whatever has the word "fail" on the line.
It could be something you have running at Start Up, you could uncheck everything except for Scanreg, both PowerProf entries and Systray. Then enable one at a time.

I ran msconfig and put a check mark where you said to put it.
(It did say not to change anything unless you were experienced but I checked it anyway.) I had to restart the computer.

I chose the logged option. But it did NOT create anything. It also had no line and there was no failed as there was no line?????

The computer just went ahead and booted without creating anything as far as I could see. If it created a file, what did it do with it?

Now should I go back and uncheck Enable Startup Menu...I am afraid that I will foul something up by leaving it there as Windows said not to change anything.

    Am I confused? Yes! Very!

Thanks for your reply, but I don't know what I did as nothing happened and nothing was created and there was no line anywhere..

    Hi Yankee1621,

The file in question is the bootlog.txt file. You will find it by double clicking on My Computer to open, then double click on C. Scroll down until you find the bootlog.txt file and double click on it to open. Look for anything that has "failed" on any line and post back.

There are three. One says bootlog.prv and two are text files. They all have about a thousand lines in them and in properties they have different dates.

I will look at them tomorrow as it will take a long time to read that many lines and it is late.

Should I uncheck the *enable startup* menu????
I am worried as it did say not to check anything there unless you were experienced and knew what you were doing. I fail both of those criteria.

"My computer will not boot properly. "
How long has this been going on ?

" "Should I uncheck the *enable startup* menu????" "
Yes go start run type msconfig and hit enter,, use the advanced
button and uncheck it. then restart the pc

an easy way to get the correct bootlog text is right click on the desktop , in the contect menu choose ,new, shortcut
and copy paste this in to the command field
    C:\BOOTLOG.TXT

    hit next then finish
Open it then go search for
    fail
copy paste all those here for us
    then f3 etc etc etc

The job of find the word fail can be quite easy. You will find the file at C:\bootlog.txt. It is a Hidden file, go to Windows Explorer in the toolbar at View, then Folder Options, then click on View in the new window, then select Show All Files in the white box, then OK.
You can use Notepad to open it. If too large for Notepad it will open in Wordpad. Using Notepad, go to the toolbar at Search then Find, enter in the word "fail" and click Find Next. Note that line and keep on doing the Find until you reach the bottom.
If opens in Wordpad, go to Edit and then Find.

    In bootlog text:
    [00153107] Dynamic load device
[00153107] Dynamic load failed : [00153108] File not found

    Bootlog.PRV
    [000BC61A] Dynamic load device
[000BC61A] Dynamic load failed : [000BC61A] File not found

Found once in each bootlog....both today's date but numbers are different.

Computer booted this AM...but hanging at the wallpaper is very common. and I have to do the procedure that I mentioned in my original post.

    Hope this helps...thanks...

    I should have explained a little further.sorry.
when you had bootlog, txt open and searched for fail
onece,, then just hit f3 will make it search again or find next.
Here on this PC that same f3 would work in notepad or wordpad.

Gee I had forgot bootlog was hidden normaly.(thanks Mark)

Until Mark gets back to you would you look in device manager and see if there are any exclamation points
Right click on the my computer icon ,select properties, then device manager,, expand all the plus signs,, if there is one or more highlight each(one at a time) and then use the properties button.
or left double click on it brings up same the window.

I have one,, it says error (code 22) which only means Ive disabled it with device manager.

Have you got some kind of third party screensave/wallpaper program or desktop utility ?

No exclamation points in Device Mgr.
(An easy way to get System Properties is to hit the Windows Logo key and Pause Break key.)

I have Paper Quote which dls a different wallpaper every day if you activate it, but I don't always use it. Sometimes I use a digital photo as wallpaper.

The screensaver is the *My Pictures* screensaver that is included in Windows ME.

None of these have ever caused a problem before, at least not that I know of.

( I have always had the computer set to show all files.)

Have you recently updated and done a full system scan with your anti virus program ? even if so its a good idea to get a second opinion with an online scan (other than same maker)
there are some links in the pinned topics of the security section of this forum..
also have you scanned for spyware ?

Maybe post a log of what starts with windows will help us spot something
    Windows Startup Inspector
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4075
Open it and go "more tasks" > startup profiles > save profile.. name it anything .text ,, open and copy paste here for us

PS I have several start up tools But always use microsoft's MSCONFIG to control startups,, anyway this is an easy way to get a basic log

The other an better suggestion already made by Mark
So go start run type msconfig hit enter,, then use the startup tab
and uncheck everything except (the above)Apply and exit by clicking OK
msconfig will tell you to reboot ,do so , see if you still have same problem , if not go back and recheck one at a time the entries you unchecked earlier. restarting each time.. until you find the startup thats causing the problem.

Good luck and let us know ?

My antivirus software is always up to date and a scan is performed daily. I also check for spyware daily with both AdAware and Spybot.
I also check for updates with those programs.

I downloaded the program you suggested and it immediately caused problems. After I installed it I went to Shutdown and clicked restart. The computer hung on the wallpaper. ( I usually use C+A+D to restart because Windows Restart usually hangs)
I had to do a forced shutdown.
When I rebooted, scandisk started and immediately froze.

I shutdown again and rebooted in safemode...ran scandisk (no errors were found), uninstalled WSI and used C+A+D to restart.
The computer booted OK this time.

You said to use msconfig to uncheck programs???? You say to uncheck Explorer? Will the computer operate without it? I had always been told not to uncheck explorer or systray, that is why I ask.

(Explorer very frequently freezes when I have used it and try to close it.)

Thanks for your patience...I remind you that you are dealing with a dummy!!

Explorer doesnt show in msconfig.. you must be thinking the close program diolog box.. or task manager as some call it.
Pacs portal has pictures and great dirrections
    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

But its a little overwhelming if you have never used it or msconfig. at first..

sorry to here you had problems with that startup tool.. I didnt and also use win me..

Since you have already ran SpyBot and Adaware,,
    Post a hijackthis log.
It will let us see all the startups and other possible problems
    ==========
Post a log from HijackThis so one of the experts can see
    what's going on.
current version 1.97.7 dont forget to also keep it updated.
If you've used it before please dont have anything excluded

    Get it here
    http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html
Unzip, to a permanent folder,double-click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan ".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet. <--- Very important

Question for the other forum members?
do you think a memory scan tool is called for here ?
    Ive never used one..

Sorry Lonny, you completely lost me on this one.

You didn't say what to paste in *RUN*. So I pasted hijacklog in it. I have never heard of it and my computer never did either.

And I didn't know what you meant with all the other things.

    I don't understand the rest.

I went to that site and it said I had to have visual basic 6 libraries which I have never heard of. So I did a search on my computer to see if I had it and it returned 7,297 files!!! There is no way I can look through all those to see if it is there.

And you say to unzip something to a permanent folder...what permanent folder?? I am completely lost here, sorry....
I think this is over my head...and I don't want to waste your time trying to explain it.

You wont need those unless hijackthis has problems running,, since you have windows ME you wont need them ,,
    just download hijackthis
    http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe
or in zipped form (one or the other)
    http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

    Heres the instructions again.
"what permanent folder?? " any will do ,, put it in the my docs folder, or a subfolder within it.
    Regards
    Lonny
