I have networked a 98 computer and an XP. They are both running through a D-link router, connected to ADSL. My problem is that on the XP, I can see the workgroup icons however on the 98, they are not showing up in Network Neighbourhood.

I used the ping command and there is communication both ways.... It seems that I don't have some setting right.

I have set each computer up to share the C drive as per instructions.

    Hope someone can help out

    Belinda

I remember this problem vaguely - as I recall you have to install
the XP Networking protocol on the '98 machine.
I do not remember more details, but more help will be coming
    from the experts here.
    regards

First - Thanks for the reply Merlin!

Here is the scoop.....The XP is connected directly to a D-Link G625 Wireless router which in turn is connected to the ADSL modem.
I installed a wireless D-Link G520 ethernet card into the 98. I am overjoyed to report that now both computers are connected.

To recap previous problems: After numerous hours with D-Link support, I was told that the router had serious problems and to return it for a new one. Whew and I thought it was me:mad:

More problems - uninstalled Zone Alarm (free ed). Clean uninstal from XP as it was the latest edition. In 98 (an older edition) I had to go in and remove registry keys and dlls. Now, XP up and 98 registering that it was up but I could not get onto the net. Finally got the 98 on the net, now the XP was not on the net. On the phone with D-Link again.....

Here what fixed my problem - on the wired computer, XP I went to Control Panel-> system -> Hardware-> Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> higlight your Adapters -> Properties -Advanced -> and changed the link speed value to 10 half mode.
I was instantly connected on both computers. D-Link said that is something they try after making sure all settings are correct....seeing the results, he mentioned it would be something he would try sooner from now on.

Anyway, now everything is up and running except for the aforementioned problem. It has just struck me that perhaps I need the same Windows log on password on the 98 as I have on the XP. Hummmm something to try....

Hope some of this information helps other networkers and would appreciate any input on the network neighbourhood prob.

Thnx and have a great day!

When you run through the network setup wizard on the XP system, you get to a point where it asks if you want to make a disk. Tell it yes, put a floppy in the drive and let it have at it. (You can cancel the wizard at that point since your network is already set up)

Then take that disk to the 98 computer and run it. That and mapping the network was all I had to do to get my 98SE system seeing the XP Home system.

To map the network, right click on Network Neighborhood, choose "Map Network Drive." The first available drive letter will show in the top field. You can leave it as is or choose any other available letter from the drop-down list.

In the lower field, the syntax is: \\name of xp computer\drive letter or folder name (no spaces, though). If you got it all right, when you click OK the drive or folder on the XP computer will be displayed immediately.

Awesome! There they are! I had alread installed the XP nework Setup Wizard but didn't know where to go from there. Thnx Miz.

Now, I would like to boot up the 98 and be logged on the network. Right now, I have to boot and then log off and back on to get onto the network. Where or where are those settings.

I also had used TweakUI to bypass the sign-in screen when I log on and I can't seem to get it to return. I was thinking that maybe if I saw the sign-in screen that would let me go directly to the network????

Don't know what to tell you on that one. I use TweakUI on my 98 system to logon and it sees the networked XP computer without any problems. Well, without any problems when I have the firewall I use on the XP computer configured correctly. ;)

I do see the network now but to see it I have to not reboot but log of and then the log on to network box comes up.

In the first area that I end up, I am on the net but cannot see the network and files that are shared.

In tweakUI, I shut of the logon password so it automatically logs on and now I cannot seem to get the computer to display the password log on screen. I have changed the settings in Tweakui but the computer still boots right past the password.

    Hummm

If you want the logon screen back again, delete all files you find
with a .pwl suffix and reboot.

Tried your suggestion Merlin but I still have the same problem.
    - I boot up the computer, it bypasses the log on screen
    - no network showing
    - I log off and it brings up a network log on screen
    - I log and and then get the message 'No domain server was available to validage your password. You may not be able to gain access to some network resources.
    - I then have the network in my network neighbourhood.

I am sure there must be someway to be on the network at signup and not have to go through all this????? Welcome more input

    Thanx Beamuse
