I am frequently getting error messages when I back up to a cd saying that files can't be reliably written to the cd, it will be made read only, use a new cd. Im using the Roxio basic programme that came with my Dell laptop. I've followed the following suggestion made a while ago:-

Click start>run and type services.msc . In the list of services double click on IMAPI CD-Burning Com Service. Where it says startup type, choose disabled.

I don't know how to follow the other suggestion:-
right click on the CD writer, go to the Recording tab and disable it there.

    I wonder if it's a buffer underrun problem but I have a 60gb hdd.

If I reformat the disc it works for a while.

    Further help appreciated.

    Hello jdover,

In Roxio, which option are you using - create data cd?

What happens if you try to erase the cd if your using RW type prior to the burn?

This could be indicative of any number of problems - with the Burner itself, with the discs, corrupted driver, etc.

    Did it ever work correctly?

Have you tried un-install/re-install of Roxio?

*In the list of services double click on IMAPI CD-Burning Com Service. Where it says startup type, choose disabled.*

If your using Roxio, fail to see what XP's native buring service has any bearing on the problem.

*right click on the CD writer, go to the Recording tab and disable it there*

Totally lost on that one. Don't know what the purpose of this would be.

    Regards - Charles

I really don't want to do that as I only back up changed files to shorten back up time.

I'm not certain but I thik so. I've only had this computer for a couple of months.

I hadn't but have done so. No change.

I found a long list of suggestions on Dell's site, most of which make burning a long process and a great nuisance.
    • Always restart your computer before attempting to create a CD.
    • Try a different brand of recordable disk.
    • Do not try to copy empty directories, zero byte files, or files that may be in use by the system at the time of recording.
    • Do not attempt to use the computer for any other function while it is creating a CD.
Always disable your anti-virus software before attempting to create a CD
    Close All other Programs
Burn An Image to the Hard Drive Using Easy CD Creator
Disable Screen Savers and Power Management

Do you have both of the XP updates from the Roxio site installed?
Can you burn a data cd from XP itself? (highlight files, toggle folder button, click copy files and specify your cd writer drive) If you can, I would say software rather than hardware issue.

    Hi jdover,

Have you tried Johanna's suggestions? - Roxio updates & trying XP's burn.

If you've tried all the remedies from Roxio, I would try Nero.

Roxio is notorious for problems running on XP.

And Roxio's notorious incompatibility with XP is kind of ironic, considering XP's own burning software is based on Roxio's and was written by them...

Yes I tried the updates, I'll now try XP's program. Is there a trial available for Nero or does one just have to pay and hope it works?

No, you don't have to uninstall it, but if Roxio is the root of your problem, wouldn't it be the smart thing to do? Reboot afterwards, then install Nero, reboot and try again with the new software.

I was just thinking that if Nero was no improvement I'd have to reinstall Roxio.

However, just in case of conflicts I'll uninstall Roxio anyhow. Fingers crossed.
