In installing Win2000 as a dual system with Win98SE, I removed OfficeXP under Win98SE (all backed up on 15 CD's, not including folders (applications) to be reinstalled from discs) and installed it
    under Win2k. No problem, except (!) I've <lost my address book>
(and that is the problem) My contacts seem to be intact, and I have a number of backups which are reasonably close to address book contents. I imported one, but did not restore my address book. Any suggestions?
All this because I want to repair some old photos and put them in an album!
Eight years of retirement and I still don't have time to get all the things I want to do done because all thee other things come up!
    TIA

The answer to lost address book.

Ignore last start of thread (query). Solution was the inadvertent creation of two data profiles (better one was the non-default one), probably in creation of dual operating systems, removing a partition or in defragmenting from the win2k side (although fat32 format in both. Not elegant, but the brute force method yielded results. There really are bugs (lizards!) in Outlook 2002.
Don't yet know the link between the contact list and the address book architecturally. I think DOS or assembler was more straightforward. I don't really need all this excitement.
I am probably missing something fundamental.

Naaa. If you can push and pop a stack around, this stuff is duck soup.

But the way I read your two posts, all is well at this point. Did I read the way you wrote or are there still issues you want help with?

Thanks. Looking for some elegance. What is the link between my contacts file and the address book? How do I move data from one to another? How do I share files from one OS to another in order to access Outlook from either the Win98 or Win2k side. Need I install Office folder on the Win98 side also?

You will need Office installed in both operating systems to make full use of it I think.

As to the address book issue, I think I'll pass on this one. I've had problems in the past trying to run both a personal address book and a contact list with Outlook. Tore the thing up pretty bad and never did figure out why so I'll leave this for someone who knows more about it.

For now, moving the thread. The IE/OE section deals with Outlook Express and it might get confusing trying to answer Outlook questions with Outlook Express answers.

Not exactly sure what you mean by "moving Data(?) from one to the other "....but I do know in your Contacts list you can click on New Contact add address & or any other info, and when done click on Save and Close. You would now have info for and address for a Contact.

If you want to send a e-mail to someone in your Contact list Outlook can pluck out e-mail ID's with little effort. Such that by tping in two letters of a Contacts name & press on Tab that contact is now in the "TO" Box.

But as NEWt says "You will need Office installed in both operating systems to make full use of it I think. "

Not sure if this is what you want but hope it helps

Thanks. I wound up with an erased address book, but the contacts list was present, but could not use it to update the address book. Had to restore the address from an archive .pst file and manually update it. What is the linkage between address book and contact list?

    skleeger,
I'm assuming here you're talking about your "PAB" Personal Address Book. There is no direct link per se, except for those listed in your Contacts List that you have e-mail addresses posted.

I hope this is what you looking for, because as you stated you have an erased address book (PAB?) and if you had that info (e-mail Address) listed in Contacts list they are still available to you.

On those 15 CD's of Win98SE Backed up info, are you saying you do not have a Folder labeled for example: C:/Windows Application Data/ Identities?? In there you do have all your old e-mail with addresses that you can copy.

Only other avenue I have to offer is maybe doing a search on those CD's for .pst files, as above with addresses listed. I'm not sure but the same may apply with the .pab.

After My having a similar situation in the past, as what you're currently experiencing, zero contents in address book, I now on a weekly basis either print out the address book or burn a copy to CD.

That's about all I can offer for now, sure hope this helps.

Edited: Just located the following that might help

Thanks! Your comments plus the link may easiy solve the problem. I have been using Outlook since Word 6 or 97, and this was first I ran nto this problem! Unfortunately I had backed up without realizing I had the problem, and the last backup was long enough prior so that I had to play catchup after reinstalling from \application Data .pst. Now that I know, etc. Thanks again.
