I am getting ready to upgrade to a newer mobo and proc, and was wondering if I am going ot have activation problems with XP. Last time I tried a system upgrade, I ended up having to reinstall XP.

    It depends.

If both mb's use an ACPI HAL, you may be able to boot right into XP and all needed drivers will be installed.

Though there is a seeming internet myth that all motherboard drivers from the previous board should be uninstalled just before the machine is shut down for the last time with the old mb, I have not seen credible evidence that this is necessary, or, in fact, that it doesn't actually cause more problems.

But, to save myself from problems, including anecdotal evidence of data loss, I generally do a repair installation of XP before even attempting to boot after replacing the mb.

Whether I would resort to this time-consuming approach if time were money (in a computer shop, for example), I am not sure. But I feel safer that way ;)

But I'm not sure how you relate this to "activation problems ". From all I have heard, MS is more than reasonable about activations when a rational case is presented to them.

    Neonhomer,

I did the same, changed the mobo, processor, and the type of memory. Activation was no problem, just a couple of minutes on the telephone and it was done. XP booted no problem, but I may have been lucky!
    Good luck,

    Roger

You should be able to change mobos w/o affecting your OS- after all, XP lives on your hard drive. But, any time you make changes or are unsure, BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP anything that is important to you. And if you have to reinstall XP, it's only 39 minutes of your life...:D

Used to it didn't bother me.. with win98, i had to reinstall it every 3 months to keep it running. I have my XP set the way I want it now, and hate to loose it. However, it might be good for me to reinstall XP (gives me a good reason to buy a new hard drive!!!!) That and it would let me test my new slipstreamed XP cd!!!!
