    Help...
I just had a cable modem installed and now I get the following msgs on start up:
System INI no longer exists reinstall.
Then I get a box that says: unable to load the Dynamic Link Library MSNP 32.al . System cannot find file.
Then I tried to defrag and scan disc and it hangs at 1%

Hi Itrcrr and welcome to the board.

First off, did you have a internal modem installed before getting cable?

Did you uninstall the modem? If not, go to Control Panel, double click on System and click on the + beside modem. If you see yours listed then highlight it and select Remove. Ok your way out and restart your computer.

Post back and let us know if this helped.

This should have been posted in the Hardware forum but I'm sure someone will be here to help.

    Hi,
I tried what you recommended, but upon start up the computer stated: searching for new hardware and reinstalled modem.
This is the general msg I get upon start up:
Can not find device file that maybe needed to run windows or a windows application.
Windows registary or SYSTEM INI file refers to this device file but file no longer exists. vredir.vxd When I click any key to continue, I get the message: Unable to load the Dymnamic Link Library msnp.32. al. system file can not be found. I hit ok and the computer boot up and I'm on the go. What caused the problem?
The cable installer did hook up the cable modem and I had no problems prior to him installing.
    Thanks for your help.
    Pat

Also if an Internal Modem did exist you may need to follow what Dopey suggest and the shut down and physically remove the Modem.

Otherwise Windows will ( or at least try ) to re-install it.

Use the System File Checker to replace those files, Start\Run, type in SFC and press Enter. Click on Extract one file from installation disk. Then type in this in the white box.
    c:\windows\system\vredir.vxd
Click on Start in the SFC window, another window will open prompting where to get the file from, have your windows cd ready and insert it into the drive, or browse to the folder C:\Windows\Option\Cabs. The setup files are sometimes in that folder. You must tell it where to get the files from. Click OK and follow the rest of the prompts, clicking Ok all the way.
Then do the same for this file.
    c:\windows\system\msnp32.dll
