    Hello p spino,

*do i need the aspi drivers?*

I don't know if thats your problem.

If memory serves, Nero has downloadable aspi drivers.

    Regards - Charles

I have a similar problem when trying to use a DVD ripping program. How does one install an aspi driver? Or in what other way does one use one?

If you haven't already done so, look in the volume control applet and make sure cd audio isn't muted. If you want to try a different aspi layer you can download it here. Instructions on how to install it are there too.

You may or may not have them installed. Windows XP doesn't come with aspi (MS chose to go a different route) but I suppose it's possible you could have installed an ap that included it. The easiest way to find out if you have aspi installed or not is to download the drivers. The download includes a small utility called aspichk.exe. The file you download is a self extracting file so running it won't install aspi, only extract the files. You can then go to the folder you extracted it to and run aspichk.exe. It'll tell you whether or not you have it installed and if it is, at the bottom of the window it'll tell you whether or not it's properly installed. Have a look at the following link. It explains a bit about aspi. It's not very long, not full of tech talk and explains why MS didn't include it in XP.

    All About ASPI

As to whether it'll solve your problem or not, I don't know. From your description, I'd guess not but it can't hurt to try it. If you do, set a restore point before installing it so if it gives you problems you can undo things. If it were me and it didn't fix the problem, but doesn't cause any other problems, I'd keep it. It may save you some other problem down the road. It's up to you.

Sounds like the same problem I am having.. I am trying to run AudioCatalyst and it tells me I am unable to use ASPI for ripping CD's... I know it work with my hardware, because I used to do it under Win98SE a while back.. (same version of software)

This will sound crazy. . .

But there are a bunch of bad bugs in the Adaptec ASPI v4.7x.x

So how do you fix it? - First Download and install the v4.7x.x (what ever the current offering) then reboot. - Now download and install ASPI v4.60 and reboot. - This will "Upgrade" v4.7x.x to a fully working version. (go figure)

Now you may see statements that v4.6 is not for W2k or XP, but it works just fine.

I use a bunch of aspi based programs and this works great for me.
