    Temporary Directory Problems.

I tried sending a picture from Microsoft Picture It and I am getting message to check the settings of my Temporary Directory while using netscape.

I searched for temporary files/ directories and under Windows there is a temp folder with 586 MB in it!

Could someone please advise about moving to trash,,,,,I thought of doing this and holding it there while I checked to see if this large folder was the problem, but it says that it is too large for trash and only way it to delete the whole thing directly,
    I didn't of course,,,,,,,,that is why I am here.

Is it safe to delete,,,,,,is this part of my netscape sending problem for the picture? I haven't had this problem before,

I am using Windows 98 second edition..

    Thanks.

    Hi Gloria,

I think we can safely assume that you haven't deleted any Temp files for a very long time! ;)

    Do this:

    Close Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp

It is safe to delete everything in that folder. The Recycle Bin size will determine how many of those files it will contain, at one time. You might want to delete the files in 3 or 4 increments.

Ordinarily, I suggest using the Windows "Find" for *.tmp, and then deleting all files found. However, with such a large folder it would take some time to "find" that many files.

By default, in Windows 98, the Recycle Bin will hold 10% of the size of your HD. Mine is 20 GB, and the Recycle Bin capacity is 204 MB. So, keep this in mind when deleting your *.tmp files. You can increase the maximum, but I don't know whether or not that will be necessary.

Once you have cleared the Temp folder, remember to purge those files at least once/week. Program Installs, uninstalls, and a multitude of other processes use the Temp folder.

    Temp directory files

Thanks so much for the advise..You're right, it took a while and a bit scary with all the warnings that deleting would disable the applications. I did forge ahead however, and emptied them and then defragged.

And you are correct - I have a 6GB harddrive so you can imagine the space it free up.

I had no idea that it was set so high on the temp files!

    Thanks again.

    Hi Gloria,

Good news indeed! Now you know to keep that Temp folder in your control!
