I upgraded my IE/OE from version 5.5 to 6.0. Outlook Express now shows v6.00.2800.1123.
My current Option settings are the same as they were in v5.5, (with the exception that "Do not allow Attachments…" under the Security tab is unchecked)
Now when OE opens, my numerous expandable subfolders under the "Inbox" do not expand as they did in v5.5. The Inbox still has the + sign and I can expand the list of sub folders.
I always thought when OE was shut down, upon the next reopening it would revert to the last setting. For example if I closed OE with Inbox subfolders expanded and the Inbox displaying the "“ sign, OE would show these same subfolders upon reopening.

So why is OE 6.0 different, and can this be changed?

If I remember correctly, this change took place in connection with a recent update, one of the cumulative patches.

As soon as there is a new message in one of the subfolders, it will automatically expand to show it.

In Tools > Options > General, You have to tick the check box for "Automatically show folders with unread messages ".

    Christer,
Thanks, I figured MS did something like that. I did notice as you mentioned that when I set the General Tab setting to "Automatically show folders with unread messages ", that the sublist showed up, but only if I had a rule sending it to one in the sublist.
Is there any kind of workaround available?

If possible, I believe that it would require a real Registry Hacker to get a workaround on that behaviour.

    I´m not on that list ...... ;) ...... !

    Workaround:

Leave an unread message in each folder.

Possible solution (courtesy of Kelly Theriot, MS-MVP):

Some users claim to have lost the option of having Outlook Express open with all of the folders expanded (or at least the ones that were expanded when Outlook Express was last closed).

Workaround attempted: Extract these OE files from pre-SP1files from $NTServicePackUninstall: - msimn.exe and - msoe.dll. However, XP actually goes and auto-replaces them with the SP1 versions seconds after the copy.

Workaround solution: Create a folder called \pre-sp1 under \Program Files\Outlook Express, copy those 2 pre-SP1 files in there, and execute this old version of msimn.exe to get OE running back the way it was before installing SP1.

    Thanks for the 2 suggestions.

Tried the second one, and since my O/S is Win98SE went to the .cab folders and extracted both from the original CD (IE v5.5), installed per instruction in a folder, then had no change upon execution, so it seems to me that this method doesn't work for Win98SE.

I did make a folder in the Inbox & Outbox with one unread message in each and this works fine for now.

Thought it might have worked for 98 too - but obviously not. Sorry!
