    Hi

I installed Office 2000 on PC with Windows 98 platform "“ during installation
    the following message was displayed:-
‘Error loading IEDKCS32.DLL. A device attached to the system is not
    functioning’

Although Office 2000 components seem to be successfully installed, other modules
on the PC seem to be adversely affected "“
1 "“ dial up box not displayed when opening IE browser so cannot connect to Internet
2 "“ email messages not displayed in preview pane (Outlook Express)
3 "“ not able to display actual Windows help documentation "“ only help
    items index are displayed

Not sure if any of this behaviour linked to above error message but uninstalling
Office 2000 and reinstalling Windows 98(2nd Edition) has not resolved the problems.

    Any advice/solution greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    Hi kennyro
Welcome to the boards! By the looks of it, you may have to extract a new copy of the winhlp32.exe file from your CD. See here.

Office and IExplorer are tightly enmeshed and you seem to have
introduced some incompatibility with the Office install.
I would do a Control Panel\Add Remove Programs\Microsoft Internet Explorer and try the repair option.
If you cannot see this, try to repair IE from the office CD IE
    Folder/Setup
    regards

Office 2000 also has a repair feature. Just put in the install disk, and the option to repair should come up.. Takes alittle while.

Not yet unfortunately - not actually my own PC and can only access it occasionally when I get time at the weekends.
Tried the repair option with no success - also tried to install an updated version of IE (6) but could not even copy file from CD - not being able to move files in Windows Explorer seems to be another problem.
All symptoms look like typical virus infection problems to me, but virus checker not picking anything up.
It's also been suggested that the disk may have to be formatted and Windows 98 reinstalled - not too keen on this option at the minute - mainly since I've never done it before.
    Thanks

    Hi again kennyro
It's the Windows 98 CD that's scratched? You did try extracting just the file I mentioned?
