Ok I was fianlly convinced to upgrade to win 2000 prof. worked my way through all the driver and modem conflicts and now all my favorite places are missing such as ( run/msconfig.)

Anyone know how to find my startup/systray Prog's?

    Furthermore...
I have decided to flash my bios and then reinstall but need to boot from dos, unfortunatley f5 and f8 take me to 2000
recovery instead of the dos prompt can I still use a dos boot disk?
Is their a way to get to a dos prompt where I can exit windows?
What If I want to format my disk and re- install a different os?Help I need my dos... lol

    Sorry about the panic...

    Thanx's in advance, Mj.

To answer your first question, there is no MSCONFIG built in to w2k, However, the msconfig for XP is compatible with windows 2000 so you could copy msconfig utility from a xp box and drop it in %SystemRoot%\system32. If you don't have access to a xp box you can find the msconfig.exe all over the internet.

Now as far as all your DOS questions, what windows 2000 has is a 16-bit virtual MSDOS environment, it doesn't have the dos your used to in previous windows versions. If you want to see a listing of commands that are available type "help |more" at a command prompt. If you are needing to update your bios or install a different os you would need to use a boot disk. Keep in mind that if you changed your File System to NTFS then you will have limited functionality once you boot to a floppy becuase you can't access the HD (unless using ntfsdos or similar utility).

If you use a boot disk to get ready to install a new os and the machine already has w2k on it, its helpfull to have some of the utilities you would need to use on the bootdisk (ie.. fdisk, format, copy, cdrom drivers, etc..).

Post back if you need more clarification.

    Jim

Thanks Jim, I have the msconfig.exe on a disk around here somewhere, and yep I did convert to NTFS so I am going to re install with Fat 32.
Im thinking I may just drop it into my other pc and format the whole thing!

    Thank's again, Maryjane.(Mj)
