    cdr101:not ready reading drive

    Hi folks,
A friend brought a computer over for me to fix. It an old gateway p5-100. Somebody's put a Shuttle m/b in with a AMD k-6/450. At first it would not boot at all,and the door on the CD was broke.
So I cleared the cmos memory, it fired up ok,I installed an old CD rom I had, and the CD worked fine. He told me he wanted to format and reinstall windows, so I formated it. Then when I tried to install win 98(using boot floppy),I keep getting the "cdr101:not ready reading drive F:" message. I've tried using another boot floppy,I switched it from ide 1 to ide 2(yep,I changed the jumper to slave to master),I tried using another CD. I keep getting this message. The last CD I tried is a 40 speed, the floppy should have the drivers for it.
I'm hoping to find some answers here. You guys know everything. (Or at least to someone whos knows as little as me, it seems you do)

CDR101 is a bad drive, or bad media.

If you are getting the same read error using different CDrom drives then your CD is suspect.

On another system I would try to make a copy of the install CD then try that new one.

(Don't forget to update his system with a marker... Case by Gateway.)

CDR101 is a bad drive, or bad media.

I tried using different boot floppys and different CDrom drives. I'm not using a bootable CD.
Hey,and thanks for the quick answer.

Profgab101's point was - try another install CD - disk not drive, or try a copy of your existing install CD.

Well,I've tried four different boot floppys,1 Win 98,1 Win 95,and 2 different WinME. I have put in three different cdrom drives plus a DVD rom. I have tried Win 98 full version,a copy of Win98,Win 98 oem by NEC,WinME upgrade, and WinME full version, and a copy of the ME upgrade. I even made a bootable CD. About every third try,(no matter what drive or boot I use,)I can type in :dir and see what's on the cd. But when I type setup,it goes back to not ready reading drive F:. Drive F: because it has two small h/ds in it. It simply will not read the cd,only give a list of the contents now and then. It worked fine before I formatted the h/d. Oh, I went to MS and downloaded the latest cdr drivers and installed them....no luck. Does anyone have any idea what this problem is? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. :(

Sympathise with your dilemma, but starting a new thread on an ongoing topic is confusing and will not get it more attention. Threads merged

Two things you might try .......

Another power lead from the power supply.

    Another ribbon cable.

    Well,I did it (finally)

I kept trying and trying with no results when I thought "it was working fine before I removed the OS ". So I put the h/d in my other machine as master and started installing Windows. Just when it started setting up the hardware, I shut it down and out it back in the Gateway, then fired it up and let it discover the hardware in that one. It worked ! With Windows installed, the CD operated fine. But I would still like to know what was keeping the CD from reading.

One of life's - or should that be Windows? - small mysteries :) You certainly like to live dangerously, but 'He who dares, wins' - you won

Thanks for posting back with the 'ultimate' solution.

It seems where computers are concerened,I live under Murphys Law. But it always puts another wrinkle on the brain. LOL

I would still like to know just what happened though.
