    I had installed WinXp Pro Japanese version on C:/ partition and WinXp Pro English version on D:/ partition of my hard. Switching on my pc, I used to have a black sereen with two OS listed and asked me to choose one of them to start.

    Since yesterday, I don't get the black screen to choose one of the OSes and my system boots into the C partition. My Boot.ini file reads as following:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    I know there should be another line at the bottom for the D partion. But it's gone. Do anyone knows the correct format of the line I have to add?

    thanks for any kind of advice.

    Simplest is Here. Take a look at bootcfg /scan.

    At a guess the missing line is
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

    A couple other items.

    The time before the default OS loads can be shortened quite a bit if you want.
    Timeout=nn where nn is the number of seconds you want to pause before loading the default OS version. 5 is usually enough and 10 is plenty.

    The text toward the end, "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" in your case, is pure description. If you want, you could put in a more descriptive set of terms like "English Version" for one and "Japanese Version" for the other.

    Hi Newt,

    You always have the answers to all the questions.
    Let me thank you for all the help you've been to me and for the time you've spent on answering my questions.

    I'll go back home this evening and will add the lost line and will let you know the result.

    One more time thanks a million.....

    Newt,

    your suggestion was exactly what I was looking for. I added your extra line to the end of boot.ini and was able to boot in the D: partition.

    I appreciate your help.
