I have Windows 98 S/E. My internet server downloaded some kind of update for security from Windows web site. Ever since he did this, I can't hear my modem dialing. I have check, and it is turn on. I just like to hear it when it is dialing, instead of just watching the screen. Any sugestions?
    Thanks, Bettyboop

Hi Betty- If you go the the Modems applet in Control Panel, the General Tab will show a window with a list of modems. Select your modem and then press the Properties button. In properties, again find the General tab and there is a slider there that controls modem speaker volume. Set it where you want. Happy holidays! Clydeo22

    Sound from modem

I went to the control panel before I ever wrote to you. The slide bar was all the way over to on. I even tried to slide it to off and reboot , then return it to on. It still has no sound. I thought of unpluging the phone, then shut down and connect the phone line back up. But I haven't tried that yet. Oh well I guess I don't have to hear it dialing.
    Thanks, Betty Boop

In modem properties, from device mangler, Advanced.
In the extra settings box, put this: M1L1

Sorry, That didn't work either. I just don't understand what changed it. I know I could hear it dialing before the guy downloaded some kind of update from Microsoft. He said it was a security update. You get them to fix one thing and something else doesn't work like it did.
    Thanks again, Bettyboop

In addition to the other fixes, go into your dialup networking folder in my computer. Highlight your dialup, right click properties, and check and see if the slider is up in volume there.

I put just the L1 in the location that you said. I went to dial-up and properties and right clicked. The screen that came up had:
Generl, Server type, Scripting and Multilink. I didn't see any slider bar at that location. I will reboot and see it changing the M1L1 to just L1 will help.
    Thanks, Betty boop

I still can't hear the modem dialing but I bet you are getting tired of hearing me complain. I will just have to get use to not hearing the dial-up.
Thanks for all your help, BettyBoop
