    Heres the situation:

    Current Configuration:
    NT Server PDC
NT Server BDC also running Exchange

Win2k server sitting idle with a new install.

This Organization wants to migrate from the NT PDC to the win2k box and make it the PDC.

Any ideas on the best solution to make this move?

I read your situation (Thanks Newt) and this one is a little diffrent after more investigation.

I have a NT 4 PDC named CAPITAL and is also the DHCP server.
I have a NT 4 BDC named CAPITAL01, that is also running Exchange 5.5
I have a new 2000 server named CAPITAL02 that is simply idle and is a domain member

The final plan is to have CAPITAL02 be the PDC.
The CAPITAL01 box the BDC and exchange box.
    Then, finally retire CAPITAL

What if I upgraded CAPITAL to 2000, then upgraded CAPITAL01 to 2000 and then ran DCPROMO on CAPITAL02?

I have heard conflicting stories about upgrading NT to 2000. Is this a doable plan?

The NT Servers are running NT 4.00.1381
Exchange 5.5 has service pac 3

Your help would be appreciated. :)

I think your plan should be fine. But do look back at the other thread for mentions of DNS. No idea if you are using it now but you gotta. And since you plan to retire the box doing DHCP for you, you certainly have to make sure you have DHCP service running on one of your final DCs.

As far as the NT4 to 2K Upgrade, it's worked perfectly every time we've had occasion to do it. I know the general recommendation on upgrades is Don't but this is an exception.

I would make sure the NT4 system was running clean before the upgrade though. Disk cleanup, chkdsk /r, defrag, and then do the upgrade. Also - best to do the deed with a slipstreamed CD for whatever SP you decide you want to run. Lots cleaner than upgrade then SP.

    Thanks Newt.

A friend sent me 27 MB of white papers today that is supposed to cover every scenerio there is.
If I find some facts that I feel important to mention I will post them.
