I have an IBM Aptiva 2139 Pentium II 400 MHz.
I have been having trouble getting the computer
windows 98 to start up. I get the following
    error messages:

1780 IDE Primary Channel Master Drive error

    0162 Equipment Configuration error

    one time I got:

1780 IDE Primary Channel Master Drive changed

and a messasge that said Win 98 has detected that
drive c does not contain a valid FAT or FAT 32
    partition.

also could not read drive c

I took off the computer cover and unplugged then
plugged in again the primary IDE cable from
    drive c. This helped sometimes.
When this is happening I am getting two short
    beeps.

What is wrong and how do I fix it.

    Thanks, Jerry

    Hi Jerry
Have you gone into your bios and tried to load the default settings? If possible try and let the bios detect the IDE drives. It may simply be a controller failure - or as simple as a battery replacement

This is what IBM says about your errors:
    IBM errors

0162 Equipment Configuration Error - Ensure the equipment (diskette drive, hard disk drive, keyboard, mouse, etc. ) are connected properly and are set correctly in BIOS Setup.
    Load default settings in setup.
    CMOS battery should be replaced.
    System board.

1780 IDE Primary Channel Master Drive Error - A warning message to indicate there has been change of IDE Primary (Secondary) Channel Master (Slave) device.
    Load default settings in Setup.
Check IDE drive jumper. See "3.5-In. Hard Disk Drive Jumper Locations" or " 5.25-In Hard Disk Drive Jumper Location " .
    IDE drive power.
    IDE drive cable/connection.
    IDE drive.

Several possible causes, as you can see. As Daizy suggested, loading defaullt setting may be a good start. CMOS battery replacment may be another easy try.

The CMOS battery is very easy to get at. It is
a CR 2032 3.v. Can I leave the power of the
computer on while replacing the battery so as
    to not loose the CMOS?

If I do loose the CMOS setting how do I restore
them. Is the F8 key used to get into the CMOS,
and should I make a printed copy of the CMOS.
Then how do I get the setting put back in the
    CMOS.

    Thanks, Jerry

Jerry? That's the whole point. You want to clear the CMOS. Go get a new battery...they're cheap. And yes.... you do need to disconnect the power to replace the battery.

I replaced the CMOS battery. Most of the CMOS
setting remained except time and date. I have
just stated up one time and I saw no problem
this time. What bothers me is I check the BIOS
old battery voltage. It was 3.6 v. same as the
new battery. Could the old battery still be bad?
If the problem comes back what do you mean by
a controller failure. How do I fix that if that
    it the problem?

    Thanks, Jerry

    So far, so good.
Go to Device Manager, and see, if there are any errors under "Hard disk controllers "

It appears changing the BIOS battery did the
job. No conflicts in device manager and it is
booting up normaly. I was concerned that the
old BIOS battery was putting out 3.6 volts just
like the new battery. Maybe the amperage was
not the same. I cannot tell what the amps are.

    Thanks, Jerry
