Acrobat reader 6 not working in Widows XP And IE 6

I downladed and installed Acrobat reader 6 on my computer with Windows XP for home. The insall seemed to go fine, but when I try to open a pdf file from the internet or open the reader from the desktop all i get is the Adobe opening screen and the only way I can get rid of it is to use the task manager and close the process. The task manager shows I am using 95 to 99 percent of the CPU capacity. Any Idea what is happening an how it can be fixed?

I would uninstall and reinstall and see what happens.

There is a definite problem with v.6. I had the same problem as you have on 2 different computers. The reader did actually open, if you waited long enough, like 5-10 minutes, but I usually just ended it with TM.

I uninstalled and went to v.5 and all the problems vanished.

There are problems with the Acrobat full version 6, too. I dumped it and went back to 5. The PDF writer was the biggest nuisance because it wouldn't recognize margins consistently. AA didn't hog the CPU, but it didn't load very quickly, either. I wrote them a detailed complaint, but never received a response. 5 and XP are fine together.

Thanks for the feed back. I have Installed and uninstall Reader 6 several times with the same results. I also went back to 5.1 then 5.05 and 5.0. In these cases I could open the reader but the reader culd not open any PDF . I would get a message "unable to open temperary file ". I also noticed that the install program was unable to load a webpdf32.api. Make any sence?

In Internet Options, Advanced, see that "Allow 3rd Party Browser Extensions" is checked.

I was unable to find any setting option for 3rd party plug-ins in advanced options.

It's the 12th check box down under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - Browsing
